Overview

Fondazione Montagna sicura - Fondation Montagne sûre (FMS) is a non-profit foundation established in 2002 by law of the autonomous region of Aosta Valley (legge regionale 24 giugno 2002, n. 9). Its founding members are the Regione autonoma Valle d'Aosta, the Comune di Courmayeur, the Soccorso alpino valdostano (Aosta Valley mountain rescue), and the Unione valdostana guide di alta montagna (Aosta Valley high mountain guides union). The Azienda USL della Valle d'Aosta joined as a member on 1 January 2010. The foundation is headquartered at Villa Cameron in Courmayeur, at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. The foundation's stated vision is to become an Alpine, cross-border reference centre for glaciology and the cryosphere, natural hazards, snow and avalanches, high-mountain environment, sustainable development, and mountain medicine, in the fields of applied research, documentation, information, and advanced training. Its mission is to develop and make available specific excellence knowledge in its institutional areas and to train young people, professionals, and mountain users on mountain-specific topics and ongoing changes. FMS operates as a coordination and research hub. It runs the Cabina di regia dei ghiacciai valdostani (CRGV), a coordination cell among bodies dealing with Aosta Valley glaciers, and publishes the annual report "sottoZero" on the evolution of the cryosphere in the Aosta Valley. It participates as a partner in numerous projects, often co-financed by the European Union and the autonomous region of Aosta Valley, such as ClimChAlp (Climate Change) and PrévRisk-CC (risk prevention and climate change adaptation). It also organizes advanced training activities, including an International Remote Sensing Summer School. Public-facing services include the VOG (Valle d'Aosta Outdoor GIS) platform for visualizing environmental data for outdoor activities, and links to the Snow and Avalanche Bulletin of the Aosta Valley region. The foundation also provides information on safe mountaineering, such as the "Mont Blanc Adventure" initiative to climb Mont Blanc safely. Its activities span applied research, analysis and monitoring of hydrogeological risk, study of climatic and environmental phenomena affecting mountain life, and analysis of mountain safety issues. Through its cross-border Alpine and international network, FMS has become an important reference point in its fields.
