Overview
Fonte TV is a Brazilian television station headquartered in Goiânia, the capital of the state of Goiás. It broadcasts on channel 5 (47 UHF digital) and belongs to Sistema Fonte de Comunicação, which is maintained by the Fundação Ministério Comunidade Cristã. The station transmits its signal across the entire Goiânia metropolitan area via free-to-air and subscription television, as well as satellite dish reception throughout Brazil and over the internet. Originally inaugurated on 25 December 2005 as RCC TV, it adopted its current name on 25 July 2006. Between January and May 2006, RCC TV served as a kind of retransmitter for STV (now SescTV). Its establishment is considered controversial because the channel had been disputed by the Federal University of Goiás since the late 1990s; the university was outbid by the Igreja Apostólica Fonte da Vida, and the concession was granted in 2002 during the government of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. There was an attempt in the Federal Senate to revoke the concession, but it did not proceed. The UFG later obtained the concession for channel 14 UHF, which remained off the air for some time due to lack of resources and has been operating normally since January 2010. Fonte TV is a Christian-oriented broadcaster, reflecting the evangelical principles of its founders, and offers a mix of local programming, educational content, and religious broadcasts.
History
Fonte TV traces its origins to RCC TV, which launched on 25 December 2005, on Christmas Day, as a Christian evangelical channel in Goiânia. The inaugural broadcast began at 14:00 with direction by radio journalist Luiz Gama; Apostle César Augusto presented the new channel, followed by interviews and a documentary about the struggle for the channel 5 concession. The station initially aimed to serve the evangelical community in a predominantly Catholic region. In January 2006, RCC TV entered a partnership with STV (Rede Sesc-Senac de Televisão), retransmitting STV's educational programming. This partnership ended on 4 May 2006, after Senac withdrew from STV. On 25 July 2006, the station was renamed Fonte TV. The concession for channel 5 had been granted in 2002 to the Fundação Ministério Comunidade Cristã, despite competition from the Federal University of Goiás, which had sought the channel since the late 1990s. A Senate attempt to revoke the concession failed. Fonte TV continues to operate as part of Sistema Fonte de Comunicação, broadcasting to Goiânia and via satellite and internet across Brazil.
