Overview
Food Traboule was a food hall (aire de restauration) located at 22 rue du Bœuf in the Vieux Lyon district of the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, France. It was founded in 2020 by Tabata Mey and operated under the legal form of a GIE (groupement d'intérêt économique). The venue occupied a building that had previously housed the restaurant La Tour Rose, continuing the site's long tradition of dining. The concept brought together around a dozen different counters and kitchens on two levels, with 240 seats. Guests chose their dishes from the various counters, paid at the counter of their choice, and could eat wherever they wished; pre-ordering online was also possible. The hall was open continuously from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. A distinctive feature was its eco-responsible commitment: organic waste was collected by dedicated staff, including refugees working with the association Forum Réfugiés, then transformed into compost in a dehydrator, and customers could take away a biodegradable bag of compost. Food Traboule opened on 16 January 2020 and enjoyed immediate success, with Gérard Collomb present at the inauguration. However, the Covid-19 pandemic in France forced a temporary closure two months later. On reopening, the crisis in the restaurant sector required adjustments: weekday hours were reduced and the counters adapted their menus to offer greater variety. The business was in cessation of payments from 1 July 2024 and was placed in judicial reorganization on 6 August 2024 while awaiting a buyer. Tabata and Ludovic Mey attributed the difficulties to the fact that of the twelve founding people, only two remained to carry the project. On 23 October 2024 the company was liquidated, and the GIE met the same fate on 28 November 2024. Since 15 May 2025, the restaurant Les Grands Buffets Lyonnais has operated at the same location.
History
Food Traboule was a food hall located at 22 rue du Bœuf in the Vieux Lyon district of the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. It was founded in 2020 by Tabata Mey and operated as a GIE (groupement d'intérêt économique). The building had previously housed the restaurant La Tour Rose, and Food Traboule continued the site's dining tradition. In 2006, chef Philippe Chavent left La Tour Rose, leading to its decline and closure in 2018. In 2017, Tabata Mey and her husband Ludovic bought the building and planned to convert it into a quality food hall. The required works involved three years of construction and an investment of three million euros. They included a complete redesign of the food hall area as well as the hotel part, named "MiHotel". The works were led by architect Cécile Rémond, assisted by Pierre Dumas, Justine Hotelier and Yoan Maye, ensuring each decor suited the cuisine it framed. The concept of Food Traboule was that of a food hall. Located at 22 rue du Bœuf in Vieux Lyon, it was open continuously from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. It brought together on two levels around a dozen different specialized kitchens, among which customers could choose and compose their menu, then eat wherever they wished, as the establishment had 240 seats. Ordering and payment were done at the chosen counter, but pre-ordering online was possible. One of the establishment's particularities was its eco-responsible commitment: organic waste was collected by dedicated staff, composed of refugees engaged with the association Forum Réfugiés, then transformed into compost in a dehydrator, and customers could if they wished leave with a bag of compost, itself biodegradable. The restaurant opened on 16 January 2020 and enjoyed immediate success. Gérard Collomb was notably present at the inauguration. However, the Covid-19 pandemic in France forced the restaurant to close temporarily two months later. On reopening, the crisis in the restaurant sector required some modifications. Hours were reduced on weekdays. The counters adapted their menus to offer a greater diversity of choices. In cessation of payments since 1 July 2024, the company was placed in judicial reorganization on 6 August 2024 while awaiting a buyer. Tabata and Ludovic Mey explained these difficulties by the fact that of the twelve starting people, only two remained to carry the project. On 23 October 2024, the company was liquidated, and the groupement d'intérêt économique met the same fate on 28 November 2024.
