Overview

Forlaget Falcon (originally Falcon Bøger) was a Danish publishing house founded in 1983 by the historian Anders Monrad Møller and the music and art historian Dorthe Falcon Møller. It specialised in books on maritime history, music history and art history, often written or edited by its founders and aimed at a historically interested general readership rather than the mass market. Its catalogue combined scholarly rigour with accessible, well-illustrated formats, and titles were typically issued in modest print runs with a clear Danish cultural-historical focus. Among its best-known publications were works on the polar explorer and ethnographer Knud Rasmussen, including 'Vejen til Thule, Knud Rasmussen 1902–1910', 'Den unge Knud Rasmussen, 1893–1902' and the later volume 'I videnskabens navn: Knud Rasmussen belyst gennem breve og andre kilder 1910–1921' by Knud Michelsen. The house also published maritime-history anthologies on church ships, skippers, sailors and naval warfare from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, as well as music-history titles such as Ole Nørlyng's biography of the composer Herman Severin Løvenskiold, creator of the music for August Bournonville's ballet 'Sylfiden'. Anders Monrad Møller contributed volumes on N. F. S. Grundtvig's 'Mands Minde' lectures and a collection of memoir articles. The publisher operated as an independent, privately held Danish company and maintained a direct-sales website, forlagetfalcon.dk, where its catalogue could be browsed and ordered. It remained a niche, founder-driven imprint throughout its existence. According to Danish Wikipedia, the business ceased operations at the end of 2025, bringing to a close more than four decades of specialised Danish historical publishing.

History

Forlaget Falcon was established in 1983 under the name Falcon Bøger by the historian Anders Monrad Møller and the music and art historian Dorthe Falcon Møller. From the outset the press was defined by its founders' own scholarly interests: Danish maritime history, music history and art history. Rather than pursuing trade bestsellers, it built a focused list of monographs, edited collections and source-based studies, frequently written by one of the founders or by specialists close to them. A recurring strength of the catalogue was polar and exploration history. The publisher issued a sequence of books on Knud Rasmussen: 'Den unge Knud Rasmussen, 1893–1902' and 'Vejen til Thule, Knud Rasmussen 1902–1910', followed by Knud Michelsen's 'I videnskabens navn: Knud Rasmussen belyst gennem breve og andre kilder 1910–1921', which examines the years when Rasmussen launched major scientific expeditions and became a prominent figure in international polar research while grappling with a split between his Greenlandic and Danish identities. Maritime history was another pillar, represented by anthologies of articles on church ships, skippers, sailors and naval warfare from the eighteenth century to 1850. In music history the house published Ole Nørlyng's study of Herman Severin Løvenskiold, the composer of the score for August Bournonville's world-famous ballet 'Sylfiden', shedding light on a figure largely forgotten by music history. Anders Monrad Møller contributed 'Grundtvigs Mands Minde – samt egne erindringer og tidsbilleder', presenting selected lectures from N. F. S. Grundtvig's 1838 series at Borchs Kollegium, and 'Erindringsglimt og andre ind- og udfald', a collection of memoir articles published for his eightieth birthday. The company remained a small, independent Danish publisher, selling its books largely through its own website, forlagetfalcon.dk, and through specialist booksellers. It never became a large corporate group and kept a founder-driven, academically grounded profile. Danish Wikipedia records that the business ceased operations at the end of 2025, after more than forty years of publishing.
