Overview
The Fornohütte (Italian: Capanna del Forno) is a mountain hut operated by the Rorschach Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It is situated in the Bernina Alps at an elevation of 2,574 metres above sea level, on the slope east of the Forno Glacier. The hut serves as a base for numerous mountain tours in the vicinity of the Forno Glacier and is a stage point on the Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia. Three climbing gardens exist near the hut. In winter, the hut is a starting point for numerous ski tours. Built in 1889 by the chemist and mountaineer Theodor Curtius and the mountain guide Christian Klucker, the hut passed into the ownership of the Rorschach Section of the SAC in 1920. Over the years, it has been expanded several times. Access is possible from Maloja via two hiking trails of difficulty T3 and T3+, taking about 4 hours. The hut also connects to the Albignahütte (2,336 m) via the Pass da Casnil Sud (2,941 m), a T4 route taking about 5½ hours.
History
The Fornohütte was built in 1889 by the chemist and mountaineer Theodor Curtius and the mountain guide Christian Klucker. It was constructed to provide shelter for mountaineers exploring the Forno Glacier region in the Bernina Alps. In 1920, the hut became the property of the Rorschach Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). Over the decades, the hut has been enlarged several times to accommodate growing numbers of visitors. Today, it remains an active mountain hut, serving as a base for alpine tours, climbing, and ski touring, and as a stage point on the Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia.
