Overview

Foundation "Nušić" (Serbian: Фондација „Нушић”, formally Фондација за развој културе и стваралаштва „Нушић” — the Foundation for the Development of Culture and Creativity "Nušić") is a cultural foundation headquartered at Majke Jevrosime 21 in Belgrade, Serbia. It was established in 2014 with a broad set of cultural, educational and civic objectives. Its stated mission is to improve, promote and protect culture, art and literature in Serbia and abroad, particularly in neighbouring countries, and to preserve the character and legacy of Branislav Đ. Nušić — the Serbian comedy writer, author, diplomat, academician, and founder and director of national theatre institutions in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The foundation's programme is unusually wide for an organisation of its size. It runs the "Digital Nušić" (Дигитални Нушић) online resource, which presents Nušić as a poet, storyteller, diplomat, orator, photographer, public figure and film screenwriter, and offers PDF editions for online reading. It organises thematic guided walks through the capital under the banner "Nušićevim Beogradom" ("Through Nušić's Belgrade"), a project on "Nušić as a Diplomat" that consolidates archival material, and a youth-oriented stage series titled "Serbian Writers in Short Form". It also runs "Nušićevi Hajduci", an online event for pupils and teachers of all schools bearing the name Branislav Nušić, and hosts conferences and programmes on culture, art and theatre, including material on the Ben Akiba theme. Beyond the Nušić legacy, the foundation has a distinct Aromanian (Cincar) cultural mandate. It works to affirm Aromanian folk customs, spiritual and material culture, art and literature, and to preserve the Aromanian language as a European cultural asset. From 2014 to 2017 the Serbian-Aromanian society "Lunjina" held Aromanian language classes in the foundation's premises, and the society continues to hold meetings there on Tuesdays, along with gatherings marking important moments in Aromanian culture. The foundation also lists among its goals promoting and protecting human, civil and minority rights, encouraging multiculturalism across social life — especially in literature, education and tourism within sustainable urban and rural development — contributing to the preservation of national, regional and local authenticity and of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, supporting the revival of variety theatre in its own space, and raising awareness of environmental protection as inseparable from cultural heritage protection. It is a private, non-profit cultural body rather than a commercial enterprise, and it operates primarily in Serbia with activities extending to the wider Southeast European region.

History

Foundation "Nušić" — formally the Foundation for the Development of Culture and Creativity "Nušić" — was established in 2014 and is located at Majke Jevrosime 21 in Belgrade. It was founded with multiple objectives that include, among other things, the improvement, promotion and protection of human, civil and minority rights, as well as the encouragement of multiculturalism in all segments of social life. From its earliest years the foundation combined two strands of activity. The first is the preservation and promotion of the character and work of Branislav Đ. Nušić, the Serbian comedy writer, author, diplomat and academician who founded and directed national theatre institutions in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The second is the affirmation of Aromanian (Cincar) folk customs, spiritual and material culture, art and literature, and the preservation of the Aromanian language as a cultural asset of Europe. In line with this, the Serbian-Aromanian society "Lunjina" held Aromanian language classes in the foundation's premises from 2014 to 2017, and continues to hold its meetings there every Tuesday, along with gatherings and events marking important moments in Aromanian culture today. Over time the foundation built a public programme of projects. Among them are "Nušićevim Beogradom" ("Through Nušić's Belgrade"), a series of thematic walks through the cultural landscape of the capital; "Nušić as a Diplomat", a project consolidating archival material; and "Serbian Writers in Short Form", a Nušić stage for young people. The foundation also developed "Digital Nušić", an online presentation of Nušić as poet, storyteller, diplomat, orator, photographer and screenwriter, with PDF editions available for online reading, and "Nušićevi Hajduci", an online event for pupils and teachers of all schools bearing the name Branislav Nušić. It hosts conferences and programmes on culture, art and theatre, including material relating to Ben Akiba. Its stated goals extend further: implementing Nušić's unfinished ideas and cultural concepts across the wider South Slavic space in cooperation with cultural institutions of Southeast Europe; developing Nušić's particular contribution to initiatives for founding children's theatres in the spirit of Gita Predić-Nušić's "Roda" theatre concept; contributing to the preservation of national, regional and local authenticity and to the protection of intangible and tangible cultural heritage, especially cultural identity in the light of globalisation and standardisation; supporting the idea of reviving variety theatre in the foundation's space; promoting and protecting human, civil and minority rights and encouraging multiculturalism, particularly in literature, education and tourism within sustainable development of both city and village; and spreading awareness of the importance of environmental protection as inseparable from the protection of cultural heritage. The foundation's public activity includes major recurring events. In August 2026 the seventeenth "Nušićijada" — the festival of humour, satire, theatre and art — was held in Ivanjica from 20 to 23 August under the slogan "Under Nušić's Hat", accompanied by an academic programme on "Nušić and the National Question". In June 2026 the foundation ran a spring open-air classroom in which pupils walked "Through Nušić's Belgrade". These activities illustrate the foundation's dual role as a custodian of Nušić's literary and theatrical legacy and as a promoter of cultural, educational and heritage programmes in Belgrade and across Serbia.
