Overview

Foursquare is a United States-based geolocation technology company and data platform whose products connect place information, mobile location signals, geospatial analytics, and consumer discovery. The company was founded by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai in 2008 and publicly launched its flagship Foursquare City Guide at South by Southwest in 2009. Its early service popularized mobile check-ins: users shared their current venues, collected badges, competed for mayorships, and received recommendations based on their activity and the behavior of people with similar tastes. The company’s origins were closely related to Crowley’s earlier Dodgeball project, a location-based social service developed during his studies at New York University and later acquired by Google. Foursquare initially built its identity around real-time social location sharing, but its business gradually shifted toward the underlying data and technology generated by that activity. In 2009, it opened its application programming interface, allowing outside developers to use venue and location data in their own services. This helped establish Foursquare as an infrastructure provider as well as a consumer application brand. Foursquare expanded its consumer portfolio in 2014 by separating social check-ins from local discovery. Swarm became the company’s check-in and personal location-history application, while Foursquare City Guide was redesigned around search, recommendations, and discovering places. The company subsequently developed a range of commercial products for marketers, advertisers, developers, and data analysts. Pinpoint, launched in 2015, used location information for audience and marketing applications. Attribution, introduced in 2016, was designed to measure the relationship between advertising exposure and physical visits. Movement SDK, formerly known as Pilgrim SDK, provided tools for detecting stops and associating them with specific places inside third-party applications. Its enterprise strategy accelerated through acquisitions and partnerships. Foursquare acquired Placed from Snap in 2019, adding location-based measurement and attribution capabilities. In 2020 it announced an all-stock merger with Factual, another location-data company. In 2021 it agreed to acquire Unfolded, a geospatial data visualization and analytics platform that was subsequently renamed Foursquare Studio. These transactions supported a broader repositioning of Foursquare as a geospatial data and intelligence company rather than primarily a social check-in service. The company’s commercial portfolio includes Foursquare Places, a large point-of-interest database and API; Foursquare Studio, a platform for interactive geospatial visualization and analysis; Movement SDK, which provides contextual location capabilities; Hex Tiles, an analytical tiling system based on the H3 global grid; and Foursquare Graph, a time-aware geospatial knowledge graph launched in 2023. These products are intended for use in areas such as navigation, delivery, retail, advertising, mobility, commerce, market analysis, and location-aware software development. Foursquare has continued to operate consumer products alongside its enterprise business, including Swarm and experimental services such as Marsbot. However, the original Foursquare City Guide mobile application was sunset in December 2024, with the web version following in April 2025. In April 2025, the company acquired Superlocal, a map and location-lifelogging application built on Foursquare’s geospatial platform. Foursquare also announced a workforce reduction of approximately 105 employees in May 2024. Its present identity is therefore centered on commercial location intelligence, geospatial data infrastructure, developer tools, and analytics, while retaining selected consumer-facing location products.

History

Foursquare was established in 2008 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai. Crowley’s earlier Dodgeball project, a mobile social service created during his studies at New York University, provided an important conceptual predecessor. Foursquare City Guide launched publicly at South by Southwest in 2009 and made venue-based mobile check-ins a recognizable consumer behavior. Users could announce visits, earn badges, compete for venue mayorships, and receive recommendations based on their activity and the behavior of other users. The company opened its API in November 2009, allowing developers to use Foursquare’s venue and location data in external applications. After reaching one million users, Foursquare opened a second office in San Francisco in 2010. This period established a dual identity: Foursquare remained a consumer social and discovery application, but it was also accumulating a substantial structured database of places and user-generated activity. In 2011, Foursquare began developing Pilgrim SDK, a technology intended to recognize stops and associate them with specific places. The technology combined signals such as GPS, cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer information, and time of day with machine-learning models. It later became Movement SDK, reflecting the company’s increasing focus on contextual location infrastructure. The product was renamed from Pilgrim SDK to Movement SDK in January 2023. A significant product change occurred in 2014. Foursquare launched Swarm to handle check-ins, social sharing, and personal location history, while Foursquare City Guide was redesigned to concentrate on local search and recommendations. This division allowed the company to preserve the check-in behavior in a dedicated application while repositioning the main Foursquare brand around helping users find places. From 2015 onward, Foursquare developed a portfolio of enterprise products. Pinpoint, launched in April 2015, addressed location-based marketing and advertising. Attribution followed in February 2016 and focused on measuring whether advertising exposure was associated with visits to physical locations. Movement SDK, made available to developers in 2017, extended Foursquare’s stop-detection and contextual-awareness technology into third-party software. Foursquare also expanded in the Asia-Pacific region through partnerships involving companies such as Tencent and Samsung and opened an office in Singapore. An engineering office in Chicago followed in 2018. Leadership changed in January 2016, when co-founder Dennis Crowley moved from chief executive to Executive Chairman and Jeff Glueck became CEO. The company later appointed David Shim as CEO in December 2019. Foursquare announced an all-stock merger with Factual in April 2020; in November of that year, Shim stepped down and Gary Little became CEO. Foursquare’s acquisition strategy strengthened its commercial location-data position. In May 2019 it acquired Placed from Snap, adding capabilities associated with location-based measurement. In 2021 it agreed to acquire Unfolded, a platform for geospatial data integration, visualization, and analysis. Unfolded was subsequently renamed Foursquare Studio. These moves complemented Foursquare Places, its point-of-interest database and developer API, and helped consolidate a platform serving advertising, navigation, delivery, mobility, retail, commerce, and analytics use cases. The company continued to add analytical infrastructure. Hex Tiles, introduced in 2022, used the H3 global grid system to support efficient processing of large geospatial and temporal datasets. Foursquare Graph, launched in 2023, introduced a knowledge-graph approach intended to unify disparate geospatial datasets and enable time-aware analysis. Consumer experimentation continued through products such as Marsbot, an app that supplied location-aware recommendations, and Rewards, which offered points in exchange for background location participation. Both were later discontinued, as was the Marsbot for AirPods experience. The original Foursquare City Guide mobile application was sunset on December 15, 2024, and its web version followed on April 28, 2025. The change marked a further separation between Foursquare’s historical consumer brand and its principal commercial role as a location-data and geospatial technology provider. In April 2025, Foursquare acquired Superlocal, a map application offering automatic location logging, personalized recommendations, and a ‘Fog of World’ travel-visualization feature. Foursquare also reported a reduction of approximately 105 employees in May 2024. The company’s current product identity is centered on geospatial data, place intelligence, developer services, measurement, and large-scale location analytics, with Swarm and newer consumer initiatives representing its remaining consumer-facing activities.
