History
The history page of Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) traces the institution from medieval hospitals in Frankfurt (Oder) to Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) GmbH. The first hospital in Frankfurt (Oder) was documented in 1312; it was the hospital for lepers and later received the name St. Georg. In 1354 the Hospital St. Spiritus was mentioned for the first time, and the Jakobihospital, founded in 1454, was the only one of the three hospitals inside the city wall and was originally intended as a hostel for strangers and pilgrims. These houses were embedded in the medical system of the Middle Ages and retained their function until the end of the 19th century, being open above all to needy persons. At the beginning of the 19th century French troops occupied the city; Frankfurt (Oder) was thus from 1806 to 1808 a garrison and staging location of the Napoleonic army. The French established a military hospital (Lazarett) that stood under French command until 1808 and was afterwards used further by the Prussian military. For the city of Frankfurt (Oder), the work of the physician Carl August Wilhelm Berends played a significant role; a focus of his teaching as professor of the Medical Faculty of the Viadrina from 1788–1811 was the practical training of students. Part of the practical training was carried out by medical students in the Thiel'sches Krankenhaus, which was co-designed by Berends and led by him until 1811. On his initiative a "clinisches Institut" was established in 1810; three years later it was taken over by the city as a General Hospital. The two institutions are regarded as precursors of inpatient treatment.
