Overview
Franz Habisreutinger is a German timber trading and building-materials retail company headquartered in Weingarten in the Ravensburg district of Upper Swabia. Its roots reach back to a monastery sawmill recorded in the Weingarten records; in 1822 the Royal Kameralamt Altdorf sold the sawmill to Johann Baptist Habisreutinger, and the family business has carried the Habisreutinger name since then. For much of its history it combined sawmilling with timber trading, but in 2000 the original sawmill branch was closed and the company has since operated exclusively as a merchant. Today the company describes itself as "Süddeutschlands große Holzvielfalt" — southern Germany's great timber variety — and as a tradition-conscious business serving customers for 200 years. Its product range covers flooring (parquet, vinyl, laminate), doors and door fittings, terraces and garden products (wood and BPC decking boards, play equipment, privacy fences, garden houses), wall and ceiling panels, facades, and panel materials such as OSB, MDF and decorative boards. It also sells ceramic tiles and offers sale and clearance stock. The assortment is aimed at both private customers and trade professionals involved in interior fit-out, renovation and outdoor living. The company operates a network of branches across southern Germany, including locations in Friedrichshafen, St. Gallen (Switzerland), Biberach, Wurmlingen, Neu-Ulm, Nürtingen, Kempten, Freiburg, Gersthofen, Konstanz and Bad Wörishofen, with some older branches such as Biberach and Friedrichshafen closed in 2020. Alongside its physical stores it runs an online shop at habisreutinger.de, through which customers can order flooring, doors, terrace decking, tiles and accessories. The company also addresses Swiss customers directly, as indicated by its greeting to Swiss clientele on the website. Franz Habisreutinger remains a privately held, family-associated business. It has received industry recognition, including being named "Holzhändler des Jahres 2011" (Timber Merchant of the Year 2011) by the Austrian trade magazine Holzkurier / timber online. Its long history, broad product range and regional branch network make it one of the established timber and building-materials retailers in southern Germany.
History
The history of Franz Habisreutinger reaches back to the timber trade of the Weingarten monastery. In the monastery records of 1712 a sawyer named Johann Georg Habisreutinger is noted, who moved to Weingarten in connection with the new construction of the basilica of Immenstadt in the Allgäu. As early as 1431 a monastic "Oberes Sägewerk" (Upper Sawmill) was mentioned. Franz-Josef Habisreutinger, son of Severin Habisreutinger (born 1707), was entered in 1803 — the year of secularization — as tenant of the Upper Sawmill. In 1822 the Royal Kameralamt Altdorf, as Weingarten was then called, sold the sawmill to Johann Baptist Habisreutinger. This transaction is the founding date of the company as it is known today. In 1911 a pressure pipeline was built from the Mahlweiher to the sawmill; the turbine connected there supplied 150 hp for the company's energy needs. In 1933 the company built a new sawn-timber warehouse on Waldseer Straße. The development of new wood-based materials led in 1950 to the addition of plywood, veneer and other panels to the company's product range. In the 1960s a steam power plant with a rated output of 300 hp was built on the company premises. In 1976 the first branch was opened in Friedrichshafen. In 1977 a new administration building with showrooms and a sawn-timber roof was built and occupied on Waldseer Straße. In 1981 a subsidiary followed in St. Gallen, in 1985 the Biberach location, in 1988 after takeover the Holzhandlung Messner in Wurmlingen, in 1996 the Neu-Ulm branch and in 2014 the Gersthofen branch. In 2000 the original company branch, the sawmill, was closed. Since then the company has been active exclusively in trade. Further branch openings followed in 2008 in Nürtingen, 2009 in Kempten, 2013 in Freiburg, 2014 in Gersthofen, 2017 in Konstanz and 2022 in Bad Wörishofen. The branches in Biberach and Friedrichshafen were closed in 2020. Within the urban area of Weingarten the company expanded continuously over the years. A freight wagon unloading station was built on the old Bundeswehr site of the Argonnen-Kaserne, which bordered the Deutsche Bahn property, but it is no longer in use. Buffer warehouses for retail stores were set up on the areas of the old road maintenance depot. In 2021 buildings formerly erected by Müller Weingarten were taken over from the Schuler Group. The company received the award "Holzhändler des Jahres 2011" (Timber Merchant of the Year 2011) from the Austrian trade magazine Holzkurier, timber online of the Österreichischer Agrarverlag. Today Franz Habisreutinger presents itself as a traditional business with 200 years of expertise, offering a wide range of flooring, doors, terrace and garden products, wall and ceiling panels, facades and panel materials through its branches and online shop.
