Overview

The Frauenwerk der Evangelisch-lutherischen Landeskirche Hannovers (Women's Work of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover) is a church institution based in Hannover, Germany, responsible for work with women within the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover. It was founded in September 1941 as the Frauenwerk der Evangelisch-lutherischen Landeskirche Hannovers and carried that name until spring 2022, when it was renamed Evangelische Frauen* (in der Landeskirche Hannovers). Since 1941 it has been integrated into what is now the Haus kirchlicher Dienste (HkD) of the Landeskirche Hannovers, and since 2009 it has been a working area within Department 3 – Adults of the HkD. The organization serves approximately 3,000 full-time and volunteer women engaged in work with women. It provides materials, offers further education and training, conducts events such as the Day for Women in the Landeskirche Hannover, and advises full-time and volunteer workers. It is present in all districts (Sprengel) of the Landeskirche through the regional offices of the HkD. Its main office is located at the main office of the Haus kirchlicher Dienste in Hannover. The Frauenwerk is a member of several organizations, including the Deutscher Frauenrat, the Evangelische Frauen in Deutschland e.V. (EFiD), and the Landesfrauenrat Niedersachsen e.V. Through the Evangelische Frauenarbeit in Deutschland it is a member of the German World Day of Prayer committee. A closely affiliated association, the Kirchlicher Verein ReGenesa-Frauen und Mutter-Kind Vorsorge & Reha Therapiezentren des Frauenwerks der ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers e.V., was founded on 28 November 1947 in Hannover and registered in 1948 under the name Heim und Werk der Landeskirchlichen Frauenarbeit Hannovers. It was renamed Heim und Werk des Frauenwerks der Ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers e.V. in 1962 and ReGenesa in March 2004. Since 1987 it has operated Protestant therapy centers for mothers and children and for women, and is one of the largest mother-child rehabilitation institutions in Lower Saxony recognized by the Müttergenesungswerk (Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Stiftung).

History

The Frauenwerk der Evangelisch-lutherischen Landeskirche Hannovers was founded in September 1941 as the women's work organization of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover. Its roots lie in the 19th-century Christian women's associations that were closely tied to parish offices. In 1911, several of these associations joined to form a first federation. In 1923, this federation received the name Evangelische Frauenhilfe Hannover e.V., focusing primarily on private charity at the parish level and organizing mother training, mother recreation, and Mother's Day collections. It also established kindergartens and after-school care centers. By May 1926, the Evangelische Frauenhilfe Hannover e.V. comprised 106 individual associations with over 12,000 members and maintained an office in the Lutherhaus Hannover. In October 1933, the Deutsches Frauenwerk (DFW) was founded, formally existing alongside the NS-Frauenschaft (NFS). In April 1934, the present Frauenwerk Hannover was incorporated into the State German Women's Work (DFW). In 1941, a reorganization and church integration followed, with the Frauenwerk being incorporated into the Amt für Gemeindedienst (now Haus kirchlicher Dienste) of the Landeskirche Hannover. This was done to protect women's work from the influence and access of the National Socialists and the German Christians and to organize it under the official church. From 1972 to 1977, the Frauenwerk was part of the adult education working area in the Amt für Gemeindedienst. From 1977 to 1985, it was part of the community-related adult education working area, along with men's work, Heim und Werk, the office for displaced persons work, and the family education center Hannover. From 1998 to 2002, the Frauenwerk formed its own area within the AfG. From 2002 to 2009, it was a department of community-supporting services in the Amt für Gemeindedienst/Haus kirchlicher Dienste. Since 2009, it has been a working area in Department 3 of the HkD. In spring 2022, it was renamed Evangelische Frauen* (in der Landeskirche Hannovers). A closely affiliated association, the Kirchlicher Verein ReGenesa-Frauen und Mutter-Kind Vorsorge & Reha Therapiezentren des Frauenwerks der ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers e.V., was founded on 28 November 1947 in Hannover and registered in 1948 under the name Heim und Werk der Landeskirchlichen Frauenarbeit Hannovers. From 1962 it was called Heim und Werk des Frauenwerks der Ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers e.V., and since March 2004 it has been named ReGenesa-Frauen und Mutter-Kind Vorsorge & Reha Therapiezentren des Frauenwerks der Ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers e.V. The incorporation of the Frauenwerk into the Amt für Gemeindedienst of the Landeskirche and thus under the spiritual leadership of the Landesbischof made it necessary to found an association in order to conclude legally valid contracts. Despite its independence, the association remains closely tied to the Frauenwerk, and since 2022 to Evangelische Frauen*, both in content and personnel. Since 1987, the association has been the operator of Protestant therapy centers for mother and child and for women, and is one of the largest mother-child rehabilitation institutions in Lower Saxony recognized by the Müttergenesungswerk (Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Stiftung).
