Overview
The Regroupement des éditeurs franco-canadiens (REFC) is a grouping of fifteen francophone publishing houses from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick. Its mandate is to support the growth of the French-Canadian literary ecosystem and to strengthen its members' capacities through partnership and cooperation, notably in representation, promotion, distribution and market development. Based in Ottawa, Ontario, the REFC traces its origins to 1988 discussions among a dozen publishing houses and was created in 1989 as the Regroupement des éditeurs acadiens et canadiens-français (RÉACF), later renamed several times before becoming the REFC in 2017.
History
In 1988, at the suggestion of the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française (FCCF), about a dozen publishing houses from Acadia, Ontario and Western Canada assessed the feasibility and benefits of collaborating on matters of common interest. In 1989, the Regroupement des éditeurs acadiens et canadiens-français (RÉACF) was created; it was to become the Regroupement des éditeurs canadiens de langue française (RÉCLF), officially registered as the Regroupement des éditeurs canadiens-français (RECF) in 1998, and in 2017 renamed the Regroupement des éditeurs franco-canadiens (REFC). From the earliest discussions, the need for a publishers' grouping was evident, notably for book distribution and dissemination, exchange of resources, expertise and information, joint promotion campaigns in Quebec, and organizing collective stands at certain book fairs to pool the costs of individual participation. The primary objective was to break the isolation of publishers from francophone communities in minority situations and to pool their experiences and marketing efforts, notably in Quebec.
