Overview

The Friedenstein Stiftung Gotha (FSG) is a cultural institution of national significance in Gotha, Germany. Together with other institutions in Gotha and the surrounding area, it forms a unique ensemble of architecture, gardens, and collections of European residential culture. The foundation owns 1.15 million objects spread across more than 80 historically grown collection areas of art and cultural history as well as natural history. The size and scope of the collections derive from the history of Schloss Friedenstein, built between 1643 and 1654 as a ducal residence and the largest early Baroque castle complex in Germany. The castle and park are administered by the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten, while the preservation and mediation of the museum collections is the responsibility of the FSG. The historical manuscript and book holdings belong to the foundation as well.

History

Schloss Friedenstein was built between 1643 and 1654 as a ducal residence and is the largest early Baroque castle complex in Germany. Its largely original preserved state represents a special type of universal knowledge mediation, centered on the ducal art and curiosity chamber, from which the further collection profile was developed. The Historisches Museum Gotha was founded in 1928 and has been presenting an interim exhibition in the north wing of the castle since 2018. A new permanent exhibition of over 1,000 square meters is being created in the first upper floor of the west wing as part of the redesign of the museum ensemble 'Barockes Universum Gotha'.
