Overview
The Friedrich Düll Brewery (Privatbrauerei Friedrich Düll) is a medium-sized private brewery based in the village of Krautheim, part of the town of Volkach in the Kitzingen district of Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. It produces beer and other beverages under the brand name Krautheimer. The brewery traces its origins to 1654, when an entry in the community accounts records that Dieterich, the founder, paid for stones to build his brewhouse; a 1655 petition to the Counts of Castell confirms that brewing began at that time. Over the centuries the brewery passed through various owners, including the Großner, Herbert, Will, and Schneider families, before Friedrich Düll, a brewer from Bimbach, married the widow of Michael Schneider in 1881 and gave the brewery its current name. The brewery is known for its traditional brewing methods. All beers are brewed exclusively with cone hops from the Hallertau region. In addition to beer, the company produces radler, lemonades, and table water from its own well. The brewery has an annual production of approximately 30,000 hectoliters, of which about 70 percent is its main product, Pils. The brewing water comes from a company-owned well, and brewing barley and wheat are sourced from local farmers. Notably, Friedrich Düll Brewery is the only brewery in Lower Franconia that malts its own malt in its own malthouse. The brewery remains family-owned. Since 2000, Friedrich Düll, together with his wife Martina Düll and their children, has been managing director and owner. Friedrich Düll served as president of the Bavarian Brewers' Federation for five years until 2016, and in May 2016 he was named honorary president in recognition of his services. The brewery operates a beer garden and shop, as indicated on its website, and continues to be a notable regional producer in the Franconian brewing landscape.
History
The origin of the Friedrich Düll Brewery dates back to 1654, when an entry in the community accounts of Krautheim records that Dieterich, the founder, made a payment of "11 Patzen for the stones he bought from the community for the construction of his brewhouse." This entry, along with a petition from 1655 to the Counts of Castell, confirms that the brewery was built and brewing began at that time. In 1725, Johann Georg Großner from Neuses am Sand married the youngest daughter of Carl Christian Dietrich, innkeeper, brewer, and village judge. Later, the brewery passed through various owners: Nicolaus Herbert and Michael Will (1815), Friedrich Will (1822), and Michael Schneider (1868). In 1881, Friedrich Düll, a brewer from Bimbach, came to Krautheim and married the widow of Michael Schneider. In 1918, Friedrich Düll retired from active business and handed over the brewery to his son Michael Düll and his stepson Eduard Schneider in equal shares. He died in 1926. Eduard Schneider left as a partner in 1930, and Michael Düll became sole owner. He died in 1937 at the age of 52. His widow Anna continued to run the brewery until 1945. From 1945 to 1990, the brothers Hermann and Heinrich Düll led the brewery. From 1990 until the death of Heinrich Düll in spring 2000, the business was run by him and his son Friedrich Düll. Since 2000, Friedrich Düll, together with his wife Martina Düll and their children, has been managing director and owner of the brewery. He served as president of the Bavarian Brewers' Federation for five years until 2016 and was named honorary president in May 2016 in recognition of his services.
