Overview

FuHiKuBo (Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano) is a cultural foundation based on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, part of the Caribbean Netherlands. Established on 6 August 1998, the organisation is dedicated to documenting the history of Bonaire — both written and unwritten — and bringing that material together into a single collection. Its work includes studying and assessing historical sources and maintaining relationships with scientific institutes and individuals. From this mission, FuHiKuBo actively collects cultural heritage material. In 2013, its documents, photographs, film and sound recordings were placed on the website Archivo Boneiru. A driving force behind the collection has been Bòi Antoin, a journalist and author who gathered a large amount of material. In the Netherlands, the Regionaal Archief Dordrecht, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid) and the National Archives (Nationaal Archief) helped bring the Archivo Boneiru website into being. In 2020, FuHiKuBo was accredited as an NGO under the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Under this convention, accredited NGOs carry out research into communities that cherish living heritage. FuHiKuBo does this, for example, by recording videos in which elderly Bonaireans tell their history. The foundation also houses the Collectie Herensia, a collection of around 1,420 video recordings covering the history, culture and general life of Bonaire from approximately 1940 to the present. Besides Bonaire, recordings were also made on the other Caribbean Netherlands islands, including Curaçao, Aruba, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, as well as in the Netherlands. On 14 December 2023, this heritage collection was inscribed in the Netherlands Memory of the World Register.

History

FuHiKuBo — short for Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano — was founded on 6 August 1998 as a Bonairean organisation concerned with recording the history of Bonaire. Its stated aims are to document the island's history, both written and unwritten, and to bring that material together in one collection; to study and assess historical sources; and to maintain relationships with scientific institutes and individuals. From these objectives, FuHiKuBo has actively collected cultural heritage material. In 2013, the accumulated documents, photographs, film and sound recordings were brought together on the website Archivo Boneiru. A key force behind the collection has been Bòi Antoin, a journalist and author who gathered a great deal of material. In the Netherlands, the Regionaal Archief Dordrecht, the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) and the Nationaal Archief (National Archives) assisted in realising the Archivo Boneiru website. In 2020, FuHiKuBo was accredited as an NGO under the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Accredited NGOs under this convention, among other things, conduct research into the communities that cherish living heritage. FuHiKuBo does this, for instance, by making video recordings in which elderly Bonaireans speak about their history. The foundation also hosts the Collectie Herensia, a collection of roughly 1,420 (video) recordings of the history, culture and general life of Bonaire from about 1940 to the present. In addition to Bonaire, recordings were made on the other Caribbean Netherlands islands, including Curaçao, Aruba, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, as well as in the Netherlands. On 14 December 2023, this heritage collection was inscribed in the Netherlands Memory of the World Register.
