Fujii Daimaru was founded in 1870 when Kiku Fujii started a kimono peddling business from Otsu to Kyoto. In 1891, the Fujii Daimaru kimono shop opened in Kyoto. In 1895, a four-story building with a copper roof, known as 'Akagane Goten', was built on Shijo Street. In 1912, the main store moved to the current location at the corner of Shijo and Teramachi. In 1935, after a fire, the store became a department store, and Kiku Fujii became the first president. In 1966, it renewed as a fashion-focused large store. In 2026, it will temporarily close for rebuilding, aiming to reopen in fiscal 2030.
