Overview
Fujizakura Heights Beer (富士桜高原麦酒, Fujizakura Kōgen Bīru) is a Japanese craft beer brand brewed and sold by Fuji Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., a tourism development company based in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. The brewery is located in a quiet forest at an elevation of about 1,000 meters on the northern slope of Mount Fuji, and the brand was established in 1997, with brewing beginning in 1998. Its brewers trained at the Doemens Academy in Germany, and the brand is known for applying German brewing techniques to carefully selected ingredients and the soft, high-quality water of the Mount Fuji foothills. The core lineup consists of classic German-style beers: Pils (a golden premium lager), Weizen (a fruity wheat beer), Rauch (a smoked beer that has won two world competition titles), and Schwarz Weizen (a dark wheat beer). The brewery also produces limited-edition beers such as Sakura Bock, a doppelbock aged for more than three months. The beers are characterized by natural carbonation, which gives them a soft, fine, creamy head, and by fresh, deep aromas and flavors derived from premium malt, hops, and yeast. The brewery uses open fermentation tanks and reuses its yeast culture to acclimate it to the local water, and it does not boil or filter the finished beer, preserving fresh yeast aromas. Fujizakura Heights Beer has received more than 150 awards at domestic and international beer competitions. Highlights include gold at the 2013 and 2012 World Beer Awards for Pils, gold at the 2015 World Beer Awards and 2017 Asia Beer Cup for Weizen, and Brewery of the Year awards in 2011 (Welter scale) and 2014 (Middle scale). The brand also operates a directly managed beer restaurant, Silbans, in Fujikawaguchiko, and opened a directly managed beer bar, BeerBar Fujizakura Roppongi, in Roppongi, Tokyo, in 2016. Its beers are sold through its own online shop and through Rakuten Market, Yahoo! Shopping, Amazon, and 47CLUB.
History
Fujizakura Heights Beer was established in 1997 by Fuji Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., a tourism development company based in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. Brewing began in 1998 at a brewery located in a quiet forest at an elevation of about 1,000 meters on the northern slope of Mount Fuji. The brewers trained at the Doemens Academy in Germany, and from the start the brand applied German brewing techniques to carefully selected ingredients and the soft water of the Mount Fuji foothills. The brand's first major recognition came in 1999, when its Rauch beer won an award at the Japan Beer Cup. This was the beginning of a long run of competition success. The Pils won gold at the Japan Beer Grand Prix in 2000 and 2003, and the Weizen won gold at the Japan Beer Cup in 2000, 2004, and 2006. International recognition followed: the Pils won gold at the 2012 and 2013 World Beer Awards, and the Weizen won gold at the 2015 World Beer Awards and the 2017 Asia Beer Cup. The brewery itself was named Brewery of the Year in the Welter scale (annual production 61–199 kl) in 2011 and in the Middle scale (annual production 200–1,299 kl) in 2014. By March 2016, the brand had won awards at the Asia Beer Cup for 17 consecutive years since 1999, and it has accumulated more than 150 awards in total. In 2016, the brand expanded its direct retail presence by opening BeerBar Fujizakura Roppongi, a directly managed beer bar in Roppongi, Tokyo. The brand also operates a directly managed beer restaurant, Silbans, in Fujikawaguchiko. Its beers are sold through its own online shop and through Rakuten Market, Yahoo! Shopping, Amazon, and 47CLUB. The brewery continues to produce its core lineup of Pils, Weizen, Rauch, and Schwarz Weizen, along with limited-edition beers such as Sakura Bock, a doppelbock aged for more than three months.
