Overview

The Fundação Ary Frauzino para Pesquisa e Controle do Câncer — known since 2008 by the brand Fundação do Câncer — is a Brazilian non-profit organization founded in 1991 to support the fight against cancer. It was created by Dr. Marcos Moraes, then Director-General of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA), together with three other physicians: Magda Côrtes Rodrigues Rezende, Jaime Brandão de Marsillac and Ulpio Paulo de Miranda. The institution was named in honour of the oncologist Ary Frauzino (1917–1986), who had served as INCA's Director-General between 1980 and 1985. In 2008 the foundation kept its legal name but adopted "Fundação do Câncer" as its public brand. Based in Rio de Janeiro, the foundation works on fundraising and project management in research, teaching and institutional, scientific and technological development. Its main areas of activity are incentives for research and education, prevention, and actions and challenges for cancer control in Brazil. It develops projects with the Ministry of Health, municipal and state health secretariats, and numerous other public and private, national and international institutions. Its principal projects focus on cervical cancer control and tobacco control, as well as support for INCA projects. For many years the Fundação do Câncer has been INCA's main private partner, providing support in the medical-hospital area, education, research, prevention and surveillance, and institutional and human development. It has managed or supported a wide range of initiatives, including the expansion of the Rede BrasilCord (the Brazilian network of public umbilical cord and placental blood banks), the creation of Brazil's first public tumour and DNA bank, programmes to recruit voluntary bone-marrow donors for the REDOME registry, the construction of paediatric facilities at INCA's Hospital do Câncer I, and a pilot programme to ensure the quality of mammography services in the SUS. It also supports the Niterói Vencendo o Câncer programme with the municipality of Niterói. The foundation is a non-profit organization that relies on donations and partnerships with companies, institutions and individuals. Over its history it has received recognition including the Prêmio Desempenho do Instituto Miguel Calmon in 1996, 2000 and 2003, and a commemorative plaque from the Instituto COOPEAD of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 2008. In 2011, marking its 20th anniversary, it proposed the creation and implementation of a palliative care unit in Rio de Janeiro for patients beyond therapeutic possibilities, with the aim of improving quality of life for cancer patients.

History

The Fundação Ary Frauzino para Pesquisa e Controle do Câncer was created in 1991 by Dr. Marcos Moraes, then Director-General of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA), together with three other physicians: Magda Côrtes Rodrigues Rezende, Jaime Brandão de Marsillac and Ulpio Paulo de Miranda. The institution was named in honour of the oncologist Ary Frauzino (1917–1986), who had been INCA's Director-General between 1980 and 1985. It was established to support activities combating cancer, working on fundraising and project management in the areas of research, teaching and institutional, scientific and technological development. In 2008 the foundation kept its legal name, Fundação Ary Frauzino para Pesquisa e Controle do Câncer, but adopted Fundação do Câncer as its new brand. That same year it received a commemorative plaque from the Instituto COOPEAD de Administração of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Earlier, in 1996, 2000 and 2003, it had received the Prêmio Desempenho do Instituto Miguel Calmon, being considered one of the largest organizations in Rio de Janeiro in the "Médicos e Hospitalares" sector. Over the years the foundation has been INCA's main private partner, providing support in the medical-hospital area, education, research, prevention and surveillance, and institutional and human development. Among its projects, the expansion of the Rede BrasilCord — the Brazilian Network of Public Umbilical and Placental Blood Banks, created in 2004 and sponsored by BNDES — aimed to meet donor demand and facilitate transplants. In 2003, with funding from the Swiss Bridge Foundation, it created Brazil's first public tumour bank, centralizing data essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment research. Since 2005, ArcelorMittal Brasil has sponsored a project to install three paediatric beds at INCA's Bone Marrow Transplant Centre (CEMO) and to develop a programme to recruit donors for the National Registry of Voluntary Bone Marrow Donors (REDOME). Since 1991, the Instituto Ronald McDonald has been a key partner in childhood cancer projects; proceeds from the annual McDia Feliz campaign helped build an ophthalmology clinic, an intensive care unit and a dedicated paediatric emergency room at Hospital do Câncer I. A programme begun in 2000 seeks compatible donors in international bone marrow and umbilical cord blood registries for unrelated transplants for Brazilian patients. Between 2006 and 2008, sponsored by the Instituto Avon, the foundation ran a pilot programme to ensure the quality of mammography exams in the SUS network in Belo Horizonte, Goiânia, Porto Alegre and the state of Paraíba. It also developed the Programa de Oncobiologia, an interinstitutional programme of teaching, research and extension. In 2011 the Fundação do Câncer marked 20 years of activity. Over that period it had enabled the continuous and stable growth of INCA and gained public recognition with various important awards. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, it proposed the creation and implementation of a palliative care unit in Rio de Janeiro, destined for patients beyond therapeutic possibilities, with the objective of giving more quality of life to cancer patients. More recently, the foundation has supported the Prefeitura de Niterói in developing the Programa Niterói Vencendo o Câncer, aimed at implementing three axes: construction of the Municipal Oncological Care Plan, institution of the Municipal Cancer Registry, and implementation of the Projeto Navegadoras to optimize assistance for patients with breast, cervical, prostate, rectal and lung cancer. It continues to assist INCA in project management and to run educational campaigns with the support of personalities and institutions.
