Overview
Fundația Tineri pentru Tineri (TpT), known in English as the Young People for Young People Foundation, is a Romanian non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1991 in Bucharest by a group of graduates of the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy. It is dedicated to improving the lives of Romanian youth through education, health promotion, and active citizenship programs, with a particular focus on sexual and reproductive health and family life education. For more than three decades, the foundation has used peer education as its core method, adapting and refining it with each project. Its mission is to promote young people's access to education, information, and health services, especially in the areas of reproductive health, family planning, and family life skills. It targets adolescents and young adults aged 15–24 and advocates for their rights at national and international levels. The organization is part of the informal Coaliția pentru Educație (Education Coalition). TpT has implemented numerous projects over the years, often in partnership with schools, health authorities, and international bodies. These projects have addressed topics such as sexuality education, prevention of STIs and HIV/AIDS, youth-friendly health services, road safety, and support for pregnant women and children. Notable initiatives include "Îndrăznește să fii mare!" (Dare to Be Great!), "Dă o șansă vieții" (Give Life a Chance), and various programs aimed at reducing health inequalities. The foundation's values are perseverance, correctness, standards, and people. It operates primarily in Romania, with activities spanning multiple counties and collaborations across Southeast Europe. Its work is funded through grants, donations, and partnerships, including recent support from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for digital transformation. As a non-profit organization, Tineri pentru Tineri does not have publicly traded shares and is not listed on any stock exchange. It continues to be active, with ongoing projects and a strong volunteer network. Its official website is y4y.ro.
History
Fundația Tineri pentru Tineri was established in 1991 in Bucharest by a group of graduates of the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy. From its inception, the organization focused on creating, developing, and implementing education programs for sexual health and family life, aimed at Romanian youth. It adopted peer education as a core methodology, which it has continuously adapted and improved over more than 30 years. The foundation's early projects in the late 1990s and 2000s addressed critical public health issues. Between 1997 and 2004, it ran a project on sexuality education and reproductive health for adolescents, supporting the Reproductive Health Program. In 1999–2001, it trained teachers in high schools in Iași, Cluj, and Botoșani. Another significant project (1999–2003) integrated emergency contraception and sexual education into services for young people in Romania. During 2000–2002, it tackled health inequalities, and from 2002 to 2006, it worked on improving sexual and reproductive health for youth in Southeast Europe. In the mid-2000s, TpT expanded its scope to include HIV/STI prevention. Projects such as "Preventing STI/HIV/AIDS through Behavior Change Communication" (2004–2009) and "Preventing STI and HIV/AIDS in military units and schools in Romania" (2004–2009) were implemented. It also supported the National Program for Health Education in Romanian Schools (2004–2009). In 2007–2010, it addressed vulnerable groups in police custody regarding STI/HIV/AIDS and substance abuse. The 2010s saw a continued evolution. Projects included "Education for life and individual responsibility through active citizenship programs for Romanian youth" (2010–2013), "Development of modular optional curriculum for pre-university education" (2010–2013), and "Vocea Tinerilor" (Youth Voice, 2014–2015). In 2017, a road safety project was implemented, followed by "Îndrăznește să fii mare!" (Dare to Be Great!) in 2018. The national program "Dă o șansă vieții" (Give Life a Chance) for pregnant women and children ran from 2018 to 2021. In 2020–2021, health education for students in Ilfov County was conducted, and in 2021, the project "Educați, Sănătoși și Implicați" (Educated, Healthy and Involved) was launched. Most recently, in October 2025, Tineri pentru Tineri began a digital transformation project funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Component C7, with a total budget of 255,862.05 lei and PNRR assistance of 243,068.94 lei. The project, running until July 2026, includes the SafeAsk digital platform. Throughout its history, the foundation has been part of the informal Coaliția pentru Educație and has collaborated with numerous national and international partners.
