Overview
The Fundació Universitària del Bages (FUB), commonly known by its campus brand UManresa, is a private non-profit university foundation based in Manresa, in the Bages comarca of central Catalonia, Spain. Its stated purpose is to guarantee a university studies offering in the central Catalan counties, according to criteria of quality, adaptation to labour-market needs and territorial balance within the Catalan university system. It was constituted in October 1986 and began academic activity in May 1990 with the creation of the University School of Nursing. UManresa is the Manresa campus of the Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC), a federated arrangement formalised in 2014. The foundation delivers undergraduate degrees, master's degrees, postgraduate courses and continuing education, specialising in three broad fields: health, education and business. Its degree portfolio includes Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy (Logopèdia), Podiatry, Business Administration and Management (ADE) and Early Childhood Education. It also runs vocational higher-level training, notably a dual-mode higher technician programme in dental prosthetics. The campus occupies more than 20,000 m² along Avinguda Universitària and comprises three buildings: the FUB building (administration, academic services and general classrooms), the CU+ building (University Clinic and clinical simulation spaces for health sciences) and the FUB2 building (Lab 0-6 and classrooms and laboratories for the dental prosthetics programme). Complementary centres and services include the University Clinic, which combines care and teaching functions; the International Centre for Simulation and Clinical Performance Art (CISARC), which uses simulation methodology for training health professionals; and Lab 0-6, a space for discovery, research and documentation in early-years science education. FUB is part of the Manresa University Campus alongside the UOC, the UPC and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC), sharing facilities such as the Manresa University Campus Library (BCUM) and the student residence. Its graduates have historically shown high labour-market insertion rates, reported between 84% and 97% across cohorts from 2005/2006 to 2013/2014. The institution remains active, with ongoing research activity in health sciences, including work presented at the European Respiratory Society congress and at the Nit de la Recerca de Manresa.
History
The Fundació Universitària del Bages was constituted in October 1986, but it did not begin academic activity until May 1990, when the University School of Nursing was launched. Over its trajectory it progressively incorporated different university qualifications. In the field of Health Sciences, it has taught Nursing since 1990, Physiotherapy since 1998, Podiatry since 1999 and Speech Therapy since 2001. In Social Sciences, it teaches Business Administration and Management (ADE), continuing the tradition of Business Studies that it had offered uninterruptedly since 1993, and Early Childhood Education since 2009. From 1994 to 2002 it also taught Public Management and Administration studies. Until 2014, the FUB was a centre with all its studies attached to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), except for Public Management and Administration, which had been attached to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. On 25 April 2013, the mayors and presidents of the patronage boards of the Bages and Balmes university foundations, Valentí Junyent and Josep Maria Vila d'Abadal, signed an agreement to create a federated university structure, in the presence of the Secretary for Universities and Research, Antoni Castellà. The document committed both institutions to exploring possibilities for cooperation and to finding ways to shape a joint project. Nine months later, on 30 January 2014, the Parliament of Catalonia hosted the signing of the federative contract formalising the relationship between the two foundations and identifying areas of collaboration and common future projects. The event was attended by the mayors of Manresa and Vic, Junyent and Vila d'Abadal, the Minister for Universities, Research and the Information Society, Andreu Mas-Colell, the Secretary for Universities and Research, Antoni Castellà, and the rector of the Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya, Jordi Montaña. Just days earlier, on 22 January, the plenary of the Parliament had approved, together with the universities law, the framework enabling this federation. From 2015, the FUB became a federated centre of the Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya and the seat of that university's Manresa campus, branded UManresa, while beginning the progressive de-attachment of its studies from the UAB. The campus has since grown to more than 20,000 m² along Avinguda Universitària, with three buildings: the FUB building, the CU+ building (housing the University Clinic and clinical simulation spaces) and the FUB2 building (housing Lab 0-6 and the dental prosthetics vocational training classrooms and laboratories). The institution has also developed complementary services such as the University Clinic, the CISARC simulation centre and Lab 0-6, and it participates in the Manresa University Campus alongside the UOC, UPC and UIC, sharing the BCUM library and student residence. Its graduates' labour-market insertion rates have been reported at 97% (2005/2006 and 2006/2007 cohorts), 88% (2007/2008 and 2008/2009), 84% (2009/2010 and 2010/2011), 92.1% (2012/2013) and 96% (2013/2014).
