Overview
The Fundació Vidal i Barraquer (FVB) is a Catalan private foundation dedicated to mental health. It was created in 1964 within the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference and is linked to the Universitat Ramon Llull. The foundation operates mental health centres that treat people with psychopathological disorders, and it also carries out training and research in psychology and psychiatry. In 2014 the Government of Catalonia awarded it the Creu de Sant Jordi. FVB's activities are organised around three main pillars: care, teaching and research. Its care services include a private medical-psychological centre (Centre Mèdic Psicològic) and publicly funded assistance arranged with the Catalan Health Service (Servei Català de la Salut). On the teaching side, it hosts the Institut Universitari de Salut Mental Vidal i Barraquer, a university institute affiliated with the Universitat Ramon Llull, and it is a recognised training centre. Its research arm includes the GREMAIP group (Grup de Recerca en Mentalització i Avaluació d'Intervencions Psicològiques), approved by the Universitat Ramon Llull's Research Commission in April 2020, which focuses on mentalization and the evaluation of psychological interventions. The foundation offers specialised university programmes, such as the Títol d'Expert Universitari en Acompanyament Espiritual (University Expert in Spiritual Accompaniment), developed with the Centre d'Estudis Cristianisme i Justícia – Escola Ignasiana d'Espiritualitat (EIDES) and supported by the Fundació Escola Cristiana and Jesuïtes Educació. The programme integrates psychological and spiritual dimensions of accompaniment and is delivered in a hybrid format. FVB is based in Barcelona and operates primarily in Catalonia. It remains an active institution combining clinical care, academic training and research in mental health.
History
The Fundació Vidal i Barraquer was created in 1964 within the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference, making it one of Catalonia's longstanding institutions in the mental health field. From its origins it combined clinical assistance with a formative and research mission in psychology and psychiatry. Over the decades it became linked to the Universitat Ramon Llull, hosting the Institut Universitari de Salut Mental Vidal i Barraquer – Universitat Ramon Llull (IUSMVB-URL), which serves as its academic and research arm. In April 2020, the Research Commission of the Universitat Ramon Llull approved the constitution and inclusion of the Grup de Recerca en Mentalització i Avaluació d'Intervencions Psicològiques (GREMAIP) within the university's research group map. GREMAIP was presented by the Institut Universitari de Salut Mental Vidal i Barraquer and aims to bring research closer to all professionals of the foundation and nearby entities, offering a support framework for cutting-edge and innovative research in mentalization and the evaluation of psychological interventions. In 2014, the Government of Catalonia awarded the foundation the Creu de Sant Jordi, recognising its contribution to Catalan society. The foundation continues to operate mental health centres, provide both private and publicly funded care, and offer university-level training programmes such as the Títol d'Expert Universitari en Acompanyament Espiritual, developed with the Centre d'Estudis Cristianisme i Justícia – Escola Ignasiana d'Espiritualitat (EIDES) and supported by the Fundació Escola Cristiana and Jesuïtes Educació.
