Overview

Fundación FIDAS (Fundación para la Investigación y Difusión de la Arquitectura) is a Spanish non-profit foundation headquartered in the Parque Tecnológico de la Isla de la Cartuja in Seville. It was created on the initiative of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Sevilla (COAS) with the aim of strengthening the development and dissemination of architecture across Spain, bringing together the efforts of public and private institutions linked to architecture, construction, heritage, environment, urban planning and culture. The foundation operates as a specialised centre active in several areas: culture, training, technology, regulations and legislation, library and archive, and research. FIDAS functions as a technical advisory centre and a continuing-education centre for architects, as well as a specialised research centre through its Historical Archive and Library. Its training programme is aimed mainly at architects and other professionals in the sector, with the goal of supporting continuous updating and specialisation in architecture, urban planning and the environment. It has developed third-cycle programmes in collaboration with the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura (ETSA) and the Centro de Formación Permanente (CFP) of the University of Seville, including a Master's in Urban Planning and Land Management and a Master's in Building Assessment and Repair. The foundation maintains ongoing dialogue with public and private institutions, participating in the drafting of technical documents and in the consultation processes for various regulations, given the technical specialisation of its Regulations and Technology department. It has taken part in the validation of official verification tools for the CTE (Spanish Technical Building Code) and energy efficiency. Notable collaborations include work with the Ministry of Development (Ministerio de Fomento), the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences (IETCC), the Higher Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) and the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). FIDAS also promotes the dissemination of architecture at professional and social levels through exhibitions, conferences and cultural events. Each year it actively promotes the Semana de la Arquitectura (Architecture Week) in collaboration with COAS and the Seville City Council, an activity dating back to 2002 and held in October to coincide with World Architecture Day established by UNESCO. The foundation is registered with the Protectorate of Foundations of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

History

Fundación FIDAS was created on the initiative of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Sevilla (COAS). It was established with the objective of promoting the development and dissemination of architecture throughout Spain, seeking to unite the efforts of public and private institutions related to architecture and its professional practice. This objective is realised through its role as a Technical Advisory Centre and a Continuing Education Centre for architects, as well as a specialised Research Centre constituted by its Historical Archive and Library. The foundation is registered with the Protectorate of Foundations of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. Over time, FIDAS has built a significant historical archive and library. The archive holdings consist largely of Visado Professional Works (Trabajos Profesionales Visados), which include almost all building projects carried out in Seville from 1949 to the present day, as well as the Historical Archive ceded by the Seville Demarcation of COAAOc. Among the incorporated funds and special materials are the private archives of renowned architects such as Aníbal González, the architect of the Plaza de España, donated by their families. The foundation has published several monographic publications featuring selections of these architects' projects, many of which characteristically shape the cityscape of Seville. FIDAS maintains institutional relations with various public and private administrations. It participates in the drafting of technical documents and in the consultation processes for different regulations, given the technical specialisation of its Regulations and Technology department. It has also participated in the validation of various official verification tools for the CTE and energy efficiency. Notable collaborations include the drafting of technical documents with the Ministry of Development (Ministerio de Fomento) and the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences (IETCC), such as CTE DB documents with comments and the Application Guide for DB HR Protection against Noise; with the Higher Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE), including the monograph CTE DB HR Application to Residential Buildings DAV and a study on the application of the CTE to works in catalogued Modern Movement buildings (DOCOMOMO Ibérico); and with the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), including verification of the operation of tools CE3, CE3X and LIDER-CALENER. In terms of dissemination, FIDAS promotes architecture at both professional and social levels through exhibitions, conferences and various cultural events. Annually, it actively promotes the Semana de la Arquitectura (Architecture Week) in collaboration with COAS and the Seville City Council. This activity, whose origin dates back to 2002, is held in October to coincide with World Architecture Day established by UNESCO. It aims to bring architecture closer to citizens and visitors and to promote knowledge of the city's rich heritage, programming a series of guided visits by architects to emblematic buildings in Seville. The foundation has also collaborated in mounting numerous exhibitions, including In Vitro, 'Rito y Fiesta. Una aproximación a la arquitectura efímera sevillana', and 'Sevilla 1995-2005. Arquitectura de una década'. In the field of training, FIDAS programmes an annual training plan aimed mainly at architects and other professionals in the architecture sector. The plan seeks to contribute to the permanent updating of technicians and to foster specialisation in different areas of architecture, urban planning and the environment. FIDAS has developed several third-cycle programmes in collaboration with the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura (ETSA) and the Centro de Formación Permanente (CFP) of the University of Seville, including the Master's in Urban Planning and Land Management (M.U.O.T) and the Master's in Building Assessment and Repair, among others, which have been held for several editions.
