Overview

The Fundación Leonardo Torres Quevedo (FLTQ) is a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to promote and disseminate scientific research within the framework of the University of Cantabria. It is named in honour of the Spanish engineer and inventor Leonardo Torres Quevedo. The foundation was created at the initiative of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Santander, which in 1978 asked two of its professors to study the possible creation of a foundation to promote research. The school's board approved the creation and statutes that same year, and the university's governing board approved them the following year. Between 1980 and 1981 the founders' board approved the statutes and founding charter, and in 1982 the foundation was recognised and classified by the Ministry of Education and Science, entered in the register and published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado of 18 December. Its statutes were modified in 1998 to include the promotion of research at the University of Cantabria and the training of professionals in scientific and technological areas. The entry into force of the Ley 50/2002 on foundations required the statutes to be rewritten, marking a turning point in the foundation's activity. Since its creation, the foundation has been based at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Santander. Its main areas of activity include managing university-enterprise agreements, acting as an intermediary between research groups and companies; managing the Centro de Desarrollo Tecnológico de la Universidad de Cantabria (CDTUC), the region's first science and technology park, built in 1999; organising courses and congresses for the university community; and disseminating the university's scientific and technical offer to companies. The foundation's work supports technology-based companies, entrepreneurship and the transfer of research results from R&D&I groups.

History

The Fundación Leonardo Torres Quevedo (FLTQ) is a non-profit organisation whose object is to promote and disseminate scientific research within the framework of the University of Cantabria. Its name pays homage to Leonardo Torres Quevedo. In 1978, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Santander entrusted two of its professors with the study of the possible creation of a Foundation to promote research. In the same year, the School Board approved the creation of the Foundation and its Statutes, and the following year these were approved by the University's Governing Board, and the recruitment of founding members began. Between 1980 and 1981 the Statutes and Founding Charter of the Foundation were approved by the Board of Founders, and the following year the Foundation was recognised and classified by the Ministry of Education and Science, and registered in the Commercial Registry, with the recognition order published in the B.O.E. of 18 December. In 1998 the statutes were modified and the promotion of research at the University of Cantabria and the training of professionals in scientific and technological areas were included among its objectives. In 2002 the Ley 50/2002 on Foundations came into force, homogenising all legislation concerning foundations. This change forced the statutes to be rewritten to bring them into line with the new law, marking, together with the changes brought by LO 6/2001, a turning point in the foundation's activity. The Foundation has had its headquarters since its creation at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Santander. Its areas of action include: management of university-enterprise agreements, where the Foundation acts as an intermediary between research groups and companies to sign contracts; management of the CDTUC, the Centro de Desarrollo Tecnológico de la Universidad de Cantabria, the region's first science and technology park, built in 1999, which promotes university-enterprise collaboration and the transfer of research results from R&D&I groups; courses and congresses, an area dedicated to the organisation of courses and congresses, including oratory courses and Vaughan English courses; and dissemination of the scientific and technical offer of the UC, acting as a showcase of the university's scientific and technological offer to interested companies. The Foundation's lines of work include professionalised and quality management of personnel and services, continuous attention to collaborating groups and companies, promotion of quality activities for research and training, attraction of external resources for R&D, search for regional development spaces and programmes, and agreements with the University of Cantabria for actions of mutual interest.
