Overview
Fundacja Bankowa im. Leopolda Kronenberga (the Leopold Kronenberg Banking Foundation), also known as the Kronenberg Foundation at Citi Handlowy, is the corporate foundation of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie S.A., which operates under the Citi Handlowy brand in Poland. It was established in 1995 to mark the 125th anniversary of the opening of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie S.A. Through the foundation, Citi Handlowy carries out its largest nationwide and local corporate social responsibility programmes. The foundation supports activities for the public good in the areas of education and local development. The foundation's work is concentrated in several fields: financial education, promotion of entrepreneurship, protection of cultural heritage, and employee volunteering. Its financial education programmes include Moje Finanse, Tydzień dla Oszczędzania, Budowanie Niezależności Finansowej Kobiet, Nagroda Banku Handlowego w Warszawie S.A., Być Przedsiębiorczym, Business Startup, Biznes w kobiecych rękach, Mikroprzedsiębiorca Roku and Nagroda Emerging Market Champions. The foundation regularly publishes research results, including the "Postawy Polaków wobec oszczędzania" (Attitudes of Poles towards saving) series and studies on micro-entrepreneurship. The foundation coordinates the Citi Employee Volunteering Programme, which has operated since 2005. It encourages bank employees to share their knowledge, experience and skills and to support various social initiatives. Volunteers create original projects within individual volunteering, working with the elderly, people with disabilities and children, and helping in animal shelters. The foundation also coordinates group activities, the most important being the global Citi Global Community Day. From 2006 to 2014, volunteers completed 1,419 projects, contributing over 90,135 hours and helping 181,527 people. In the area of cultural heritage protection, the foundation awards the Prof. Aleksander Gieysztor Award to individuals or institutions for outstanding achievements in protecting Polish cultural heritage, particularly in museum and conservation work and in collecting memorabilia of Polish culture. Together with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the foundation runs the "Odzyskiwanie dzieł sztuki" (Recovering Works of Art) programme, aimed at recovering cultural goods lost by Poland during and as a result of World War II. Under this programme, works such as Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowiczowa's painting "Murzynka" and a collection of graphics and lithographs by outstanding Polish painters including Juliusz Kossak, Aleksander Orłowski and Leon Wyczółkowski have been recovered. The "Korzenie" (Roots) programme recalls the person and achievements of Leopold Kronenberg and his heirs. In 2011 the foundation began a project to find and digitise documents concerning the history of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie and the Kronenberg family. The foundation has also been involved in projects important for Polish culture. In 1998 it purchased and donated a collection of 19th-century silverware to the National Museum in Warsaw, now exhibited in the Leopold Kronenberg Silver Room. In 2006–2008 it cooperated on the project to identify the grave of Nicolaus Copernicus, which ended with confirmation of the discovery of the astronomer's remains.
History
Fundacja Bankowa im. Leopolda Kronenberga was established in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie S.A., which today operates under the Citi Handlowy brand. The foundation was created as the bank's vehicle for corporate social responsibility, carrying out its largest nationwide and local programmes. Its areas of activity reflect the bank's strategic approach to CSR: financial education, support for entrepreneurship, protection of national heritage, and employee volunteering. In the field of financial education, the foundation has run nine programmes: Moje Finanse, Tydzień dla Oszczędzania, Budowanie Niezależności Finansowej Kobiet, Nagroda Banku Handlowego w Warszawie S.A., Być Przedsiębiorczym, Business Startup, Biznes w kobiecych rękach, Mikroprzedsiębiorca Roku and Nagroda Emerging Market Champions. It regularly publishes research results, including the "Postawy Polaków wobec oszczędzania" series under the "Tydzień dla Oszczędzania" campaign (seventh edition in 2014) and studies on micro-entrepreneurship (sixth edition in 2014). The "Postawy Polaków" research identifies trends in Polish saving habits and diagnoses practical household financial management skills, while the micro-entrepreneurship research addresses a different aspect of the sector each year; in 2014 it focused on the expansion of micro-firms. The foundation coordinates the Citi Employee Volunteering Programme, which has operated since 2005. It encourages bank employees to share their knowledge, experience and skills and to support various social initiatives. Employees have a wide choice of volunteering offers sent from the Volunteer Centre, non-governmental organisations and collected by the foundation. Volunteers create original projects within individual volunteering, working with the elderly, people with disabilities and children, and helping in animal shelters. The foundation coordinates the participation of Citi volunteers in group activities, the most important being Citi Global Community Day, a global project in which bank employees try to solve specific social problems in their local communities. In the ninth edition in 2014, Citi volunteers together with friends and family members engaged 2,486 times, implementing 187 projects and helping almost 23,000 beneficiaries. Across all editions, Citi volunteers have completed 1,014 projects. Another area is organising volunteer work by bank employees for local communities during integration trips. In 41 integration trips with volunteering, almost 4,200 volunteers took part, helping nearly 8,700 people. Since 2010, the foundation has run the "Studencki Projekt Społeczny – Zostań Kreatorem Zmian" competition for students with an idea for a volunteering project; in two editions the foundation funded 30 best projects carried out during the summer. The foundation also supports volunteers financially and organisationally during the "Zostań Asystentem Św. Mikołaja" campaign, in which bank volunteers organise Christmas parties for children from orphanages and community centres, combined with giving them presents prepared by bank employees. From 2006 to 2014, volunteers completed 1,419 projects, working over 90,135 hours and helping 181,527 people. In cultural heritage protection, the foundation awards the Prof. Aleksander Gieysztor Award to individuals or institutions for outstanding achievements in protecting Polish cultural heritage, particularly museum and conservation work and efforts to collect memorabilia of Polish culture. The aim is to promote and support those who work to protect Polish cultural heritage both in Poland and abroad. Together with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the foundation runs the "Odzyskiwanie dzieł sztuki" programme to recover cultural goods lost by Poland during and as a result of World War II. Under this programme, works recovered include Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowiczowa's painting "Murzynka" and a collection of graphics and lithographs by outstanding Polish painters such as Juliusz Kossak, Aleksander Orłowski and Leon Wyczółkowski. Within the "Korzenie" programme, the foundation recalls the person and achievements of Leopold Kronenberg and his heirs. In 2011 it began a project to find and digitise documents concerning the history of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie and the Kronenberg family. The foundation has also been involved in projects important for Polish culture: in 1998 it purchased and donated a collection of 19th-century silverware to the National Museum in Warsaw, now exhibited in the Leopold Kronenberg Silver Room; and in 2006–2008 it cooperated on the project to identify the grave of Nicolaus Copernicus, which ended with confirmation of the discovery of the astronomer's remains.
