Overview

Fundacja Pro – Prawo do życia (Foundation Pro – Right to Life) is a Polish non-governmental organisation founded in 2005 by Mariusz Dzierżawski. It campaigns for the legal protection of unborn children and against abortion, euthanasia and what it calls the 'civilisation of death'. The foundation received public benefit organisation status in 2008. It is best known for its travelling anti-abortion exhibition 'Wybierz Życie' ('Choose Life'), which has been shown more than 200 times across Poland and has repeatedly sparked controversy, vandalism and legal complaints. In 2011 the foundation collected more than 600,000 signatures for a citizens' initiative to ban abortion completely in Poland, although the ban was not enacted. The organisation operates through regional cells in several dozen Polish cities, runs training courses for pro-life activists, publishes news and video content on its website stronażycia.pl, and is funded by donations. Its registered office is in Pruszków, near Warsaw.

History

Fundacja Pro – Prawo do życia was founded in 2005 by Mariusz Dzierżawski in Poland. It emerged as a pro-life advocacy group focused on the legal protection of unborn children. In 2008 it was granted the status of a public benefit organisation (organizacja pożytku publicznego). Since 2005 the foundation has organised the anti-abortion exhibition 'Wybierz Życie' ('Choose Life'), which has been presented more than 200 times in various locations. The exhibition uses 14 large panels showing photographs of human fetuses that died due to abortion, compared with photographs of war victims. Due to its graphic nature and placement in public, often frequented places, the exhibition has attracted significant attention, has been destroyed several times, and its organisers have faced court cases. In 2011 the foundation collected more than 600,000 signatures for a citizens' initiative to completely ban abortion in Poland, but the ban was not enacted. The foundation continues to operate through regional cells in several dozen Polish cities, runs training courses for pro-life defenders, and maintains an active online presence via its website stronażycia.pl, newsletter, and social media channels. It is funded by donations and describes its mission as fighting the 'civilisation of death'.
