Pillow Kingdom opened in Denver in 1974. Following its success, Big Sur Waterbeds opened in Denver in 1977, and within five years became the nation's largest waterbed retailer. Oak Express opened in 1993, followed by the first Sofa Mart in 1994. The company entered the mattress business in 1995 with the first Denver Mattress Co. Bedroom Expressions stores opened starting in 1997, the same year the first Furniture Row Shopping Center opened, bringing the brand stores together in one shopping location. In 2001 the first Furniture Row Outlet opened, similarly bringing multiple brands to one location. Furniture Row describes itself as comprised of four specialized home furnishings and bedding retailers — Sofa Mart, Oak Express, Bedroom Expressions, and Denver Mattress — and states that since its first venture in 1974 its privately held companies have evolved into one of the fastest growing furniture retail operations in the country, with over 330 stores in 31 states, and that it is currently the largest cash buyer of furniture and the largest factory direct retailer.
