Overview

Furukawa Electric Metal Cable Co., Ltd. (FEMC) is a Japanese manufacturer of metal electric wires and cables, headquartered in Tokyo and operating as part of the Furukawa Electric Group. The company traces its wire-making lineage to 1932, when its predecessor Sanwa Electric Wire Manufacturing Works was established. Over the decades it accumulated industrial wire technology and, after joining the Furukawa Electric Group, combined that heritage with group engineering and tradition. In 2005 it took over the industrial wire business spun off from Furukawa Electric and was renamed Furukawa Electric Industrial Wire Co., Ltd.; in 2006 it integrated the industrial wire business of Kyushu Furukawa Electric. A further reorganization in April 2025 merged it with KANZACC Corporation and renamed it Furukawa Electric Metal Cable. In October 2025 the metal wire businesses of Furukawa Electric and Riken Electric Wire were split off and integrated into the company, and its website was renewed. FEMC's product range is broad and spans building and construction wire, elevator cables, fire-protection wire, marine and shipboard cable, industrial equipment wire, automotive wire, industrial infrastructure wire, communication wire, railway wire, coaxial cable, and water-cooled cable. Notable offerings include aluminum conductor cable marketed as "Rakuraku Aluminum Cable," hybrid CVT and hybrid BH cables, EM-LMFC heat-resistant equipment wiring (now available in a 1500 V specification), automotive heat-resistant high-voltage wires such as EEX/EEHX and flexible high-voltage FEX/FEHX, and a family of elevator cables in round and flat configurations. The company also supplies plated products and processed items such as molded water-pressure connectors and elevator cable processing. Positioned as a metal-wire specialist within the Furukawa Electric Group, FEMC promotes its products around themes of connecting and sustaining society, and it exhibits at trade fairs such as JECA FAIR and the Railway Technology Exhibition Osaka, often through the Furukawa Electric booth. Its aluminum conductor cable has been adopted in public works, including the Chiba Prefectural Enterprise Bureau's new government building, and has drawn press coverage for contributing to labor savings in electrical construction and for anti-theft benefits in solar power installations. The company is a subsidiary of Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and is not separately listed.

History

The wire-making heritage of Furukawa Electric Metal Cable begins in 1932 with the establishment of Sanwa Electric Wire Manufacturing Works, the predecessor whose wire technology the company has built upon. Furukawa Electric itself started out in copper refining and electric wire, pursuing "the realization of a prosperous society through continuous technological innovation," and the predecessor company later became part of the Furukawa Electric Group, fusing its accumulated wire technology with the group's engineering and tradition. In 2005, following a spin-off of Furukawa Electric's industrial wire business, the company integrated that business and changed its name to Furukawa Electric Industrial Wire Co., Ltd. The following year, in 2006, it took over the industrial wire business spun off from Kyushu Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., further consolidating the group's industrial wire operations. A major reorganization took place in April 2025, when the company merged with KANZACC Corporation and adopted the name Furukawa Electric Metal Cable. Then in October 2025, the metal wire businesses of Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and Riken Electric Wire Co., Ltd. were split off and integrated into the company, and its website was renewed to reflect the new structure. This integration created a dedicated metal-wire entity within the Furukawa Electric Group, combining the industrial wire expertise of the former Furukawa Electric Industrial Wire with the metal wire operations of Riken Electric Wire. Today the company continues to serve industrial wire needs with a broad portfolio covering construction, elevators, fire protection, marine, industrial equipment, automotive, infrastructure, communications, and railways, and it promotes products such as Rakuraku Aluminum Cable, which has been adopted in public works and covered in trade press for its contributions to labor savings and anti-theft benefits.
