Overview

Futa Fata is an Irish-language publishing house founded in 2005 by Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, dedicated to producing high-quality Irish-language books for children. Based in An Spidéal in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht, the company publishes original Irish-language titles as well as Irish translations of internationally recognised children's books by authors such as Tony Ross, Jeff Kinney, Oliver Jeffers and Julia Donaldson. Its catalogue spans board books for babies and toddlers, picture books, early readers, fiction for ages 8+, graphic novels, poetry and song collections, and non-fiction for adults. Futa Fata also supports authors and illustrators through workshops and courses, and has provided a platform for writers who might otherwise reach a limited readership. The publisher gained particular attention for its Irish edition of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Dialann Dúradáin), translated by Máirín Ní Mhárta, which was commissioned through an open competition. The company sells through its own online shop and distributes Irish-language children's literature internationally.

History

Futa Fata was founded in 2005 by Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin as an Irish-language publishing house focused on children's books. Mac Dhonnagáin's vision was that Irish-language books should be of the same high standard in writing, design and production as books in other languages worldwide. From its headquarters in An Spidéal, in the Connemara Gaeltacht, the company has published original Irish-language works and Irish-language editions of well-known books originally published in other languages by celebrated authors such as Tony Ross, Jeff Kinney, Oliver Jeffers and Julia Donaldson. Futa Fata supports authors and illustrators through workshops and courses, and has given recognition to artists including Tarsila Krüse, Laureate na nÓg Patricia Forde, Paddy Donnelly and Muireann Ní Chíobháin. The publisher has distributed Irish-language children's literature internationally and provides a platform for writers who might otherwise deal with a more limited readership. One notable project was Dialann Dúradáin, the Irish translation of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Máirín Ní Mhárta, which was commissioned through an open competition; the publishers said they received applications from all over the country, and the winner was a primary schoolgirl in Tír an Fhia.
