Overview

Futura et Marge (also known as Disques Futura et Marge or simply Futura Marge) is a French independent record label dedicated to jazz, free jazz and European improvised music. It was founded in 1969 by Gérard Terronès, a Paris-based club owner and concert promoter, initially drawing on the programming of his Parisian jazz club Le Gill's. The label grew out of Terronès's parallel activities as a club manager, concert organiser and record retailer, and it operated on a self-produced, self-distributed basis for much of its history. In 1973 Terronès created the Marge imprint as a continuation of Futura, with a more political orientation. Through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s he added three sub-labels — Blue Marge, Impro and Jazz Unité — each reflecting different themes and musical directions arising from his successive Paris clubs and concerts. Distribution relied on sales at venues he ran or managed (Blues Jazz Museum, Gill's Club, Totem, Jazz Unité), at concerts (Centre Culturel Américain, Palais des Glaces, Théâtre du Forum des Halles) and at festivals (Jazz à Massy, Jazz au Futur, Musiques mutantes au TLP Dejazet), as well as on tours he organised across France and Europe until 1993. The label also used its own Paris record shop, Jazz and Pop Center on rue Clotaire near the Panthéon, and distributed several other independent European labels in France. In 1996 Terronès merged Futura, Marge and all Marge-derived divisions into a single imprint, Disques Futura et Marge, while continuing to produce new recordings, often made in new Parisian music spaces and clubs. Into the 2010s the label's guiding line remained contemporary jazz, free jazz and European improvised music, with the addition of Hôte Marge, a welcoming unit for musicians of all styles and backgrounds. Recent productions have included electro-acoustic music (Luniks Project), experimental flamenco (Hors Pistes), politically engaged blues (Franzktrio) and classic blues (Franck Goldwasser and Vincent Bucher). From 2011 to 2014 Terronès resumed concert promotion with a monthly slot at the famous Paris dancing La Java. In 2014 Terronès and Disques Futura et Marge celebrated 50 and 45 years of activity respectively. In 2015 the label became "Futura Marge". Gérard Terronès died on 16 March 2017. Christophe Féray (Atypeek Music) took over management of the label, with Odile Terronès and Christophe Féray remaining in charge of artistic direction. A collaboration with Souffle Continu has enabled vinyl reissues. The label's catalogue is available for download and streaming via Bandcamp, and its administrative contact is through Atypeek Music in Lyon.

History

Futura et Marge was founded in 1969 by Gérard Terronès, a Paris-based jazz club owner and concert promoter, building on the programming of his club Le Gill's. The label was established on principles of independence and self-production, and it quickly became a vehicle for documenting the vibrant French and international jazz scenes that passed through Terronès's venues. In 1973, Terronès created the Marge imprint as a continuation of Futura, with the same artistic tendency and independent basis but a more political orientation. Through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, he added three sub-labels to Marge — Blue Marge, Impro and Jazz Unité — each corresponding to different themes and musical directions arising from his successive Paris clubs and concerts. The label's distribution system was built around sales at the clubs he directed (Blues Jazz Museum, Gill's Club, Totem, Jazz Unité), at concerts (Centre Culturel Américain, Palais des Glaces, Théâtre du Forum des Halles) and at festivals (Jazz à Massy, Jazz au Futur, Musiques mutantes au TLP Dejazet), as well as through tours he organised across France and Europe until 1993. The label also operated its own record shop, Jazz and Pop Center, on rue Clotaire near the Panthéon in Paris, and distributed several other independent European labels in France. In 1996, Terronès decided to merge Futura, Marge and all Marge-derived divisions into a single imprint, Disques Futura et Marge, while continuing to produce new recordings, often made in new Parisian music spaces and clubs. Into the 2010s the label's guiding line remained contemporary jazz, free jazz and European improvised music, with the addition of Hôte Marge, a new welcoming unit for musicians of all styles and backgrounds. Recent years saw the introduction of music derived from jazz, such as the electro-acoustic music of Luniks Project, the experimental flamenco of the Hors Pistes trio, the politically engaged blues of Franzktrio, and the classic blues of the quartet led by Franck Goldwasser and Vincent Bucher. From 2011 to 2014, Terronès resumed his concert-organising activity with a monthly slot at the famous Paris dancing La Java. In 2014, Terronès and Disques Futura et Marge celebrated 50 and 45 years of existence respectively in the worlds of jazz, free jazz and European improvised music. In 2015, Disques Futura et Marge became "Futura Marge". Gérard Terronès died on 16 March 2017. Christophe Féray (Atypeek Music) took over management of the Futura Marge label, with Odile Terronès and Christophe Féray remaining in charge of artistic direction. A collaboration with Souffle Continu enabled vinyl reissues. Marianne Fernel, a close collaborator of Futura Marge, died on 30 January 2021 in Villejuif. The label's catalogue is now available for download and streaming via Bandcamp, and its administrative contact is through Atypeek Music in Lyon.
