Overview
Fundación Futuro (Future Foundation) is a Chilean non-profit foundation created in 1993 by Sebastián Piñera Echenique. Its mission is to strengthen the link between teachers and citizens and the city, heritage, education and nature, based on the conviction that urban spaces and the environment are educational settings for reflection and coexistence. The foundation runs programmes for teachers and students across Chile, including teacher workshops, educational trips (Travesías), competitions and publications. It publishes the magazine Ventanal, which has been distributed free of charge to teachers since 2000, and administers competitive funds such as Fondos Concursables de la Educación and La Cultura Llega a la Gente, which finance cultural and educational projects in communities throughout the country. It also distributes the children's book collection Historias Poderosas, produced with Fundación Piñera Morel, to encourage early reading and bring children closer to key events in Chile's recent history. Leadership has remained within the Piñera family: Sebastián Piñera was president of the foundation from its founding until 2010, when he became President of Chile; his daughter Magdalena Piñera Morel led it from 2010 to 2018; and Sebastián Piñera returned as board president in 2018 until his death in 2024. The foundation is headquartered in Santiago and operates nationwide, with activities extending to regions such as Magallanes.
History
Fundación Futuro was created in 1993 by Sebastián Piñera Echenique, who served as its president from its beginnings until 2010, when he assumed the presidency of Chile for the first time. From then until 2018, his daughter Magdalena Piñera Morel held the position. In 2018, Sebastián Piñera Echenique returned as president of the board of Fundación Futuro until 2024, the year of his death. Throughout its history, the foundation has worked to foster the link between teachers and citizens and the city, heritage, education and nature, with the conviction that urban spaces and the environment are par excellence educational places for reflection and coexistence. Since 2000 it has published Ventanal, a free magazine for teachers that offers practical and reflective educational content; by 2026 it had reached its 204th edition. The foundation runs competitive funds such as Fondos Concursables de la Educación, aimed especially at Liceos Bicentenario, and La Cultura Llega a la Gente, which in 2026 selected 35 projects to bring culture and heritage closer to communities across Chile. It also organises Travesías for teachers, teacher workshops and visits, and distributes the children's book collection Historias Poderosas in collaboration with Fundación Piñera Morel. Its activities extend beyond Santiago to regions such as Magallanes, reinforcing its national reach.
