History

The winery was founded in 1905 at Oberloiben 27. Franz Pichler Sr. (1906–1998) carried out selection massale work on Grüner Veltliner, first recorded in 1928 on the Loibenberg and in the Steinertal vineyards, with the aim of taking cuttings from vines displaying the most positive properties of the grape variety. A second selection massale by Franz Pichler Sr. followed in 1952 from Loibenberg in Steinertal. The winery continues to reproduce the chosen selection, found in many of its Veltliner vineyards today. In 1984 it achieved a national breakthrough with a Gelber Muskateller named 'Wine of the Year'. The winery has released its first two vintages, 2022 and 2023, of a 'Wachauer' Pinot Noir.
