History

The Imperial Band Club (Għaqda Mużikali Imperial) is a Maltese band club based in Mellieħa. Its history begins with the Constitutional Orchestra Club, which was set up on 31 August 1924. At the first sitting of the Constitutional Club Mellieħa on that date, Mr Walter Salamone was nominated as Vice President and Acting President for the meeting. Other attendees included Carmelo Stellini, Gio Maria Vella, Francesco Buttigieg, Gio Maria Sammut, Salvatore Chetcuti, Francesco Bonello, Gino Gauci, Angelo Cutajar, and William Howe. Marquis Testaferrata Olivier was nominated as President, Carmelo Stellini as Cashier, G.M. Gauci as Vice Cashier, and Giorgio Vella as Secretary. The club's rules were approved during this meeting. In October 1924, a proposal was made to set up a football team, 73 members were approved, and the club's buffet was managed by Francesco Buttigieg. Three meetings were held in 1925. The buffet was rented out at £1.50 per year, and 11 new members were registered. In February 1929, the club acquired its first instruments, 45 pieces plus percussion. On 21 September 1930, the Imperial Band Club gave its first musical programme, marking its formal establishment. The club's three main objectives, as stated on its website, are the promotion of musical activity in the village of Mellieħa, the stimulation of a developed sense of appreciation of the art of music, and the provision of a social centre where members could participate in cultural, educational, and social activities in a relaxed, familiar atmosphere. The club continues to operate and is part of Malta's vibrant band club culture.
