Overview
G. Giappichelli Editore is an Italian publishing house founded in Turin on 5 October 1921 by Modesto Giappichelli together with his son Giuseppe. It began as a bookshop and stationer's (cartolibreria) at Via Vasco 2, next to the Rectorate of the Faculty of Law, and grew out of Modesto Giappichelli's work as a university janitor who proofread, studied and bound the manuscripts entrusted to him by Turin's academics. The company remains family-controlled and has reached its fifth generation of leadership under the Giappichelli family. The publisher specialises in books and journals in the fields of law, economics and political science, serving both professional practice and university study. Over its history more than 10,000 authors have published with Giappichelli, including major figures of Italian legal, economic and social thought such as Norberto Bobbio, President Luigi Einaudi, Francesco Ruffini, Salvatore Satta, Gino Segrè, Gioele Solari, Paolo Emilio Taviani, Renato Treves and Alessandro Passerin d'Entrèves. More recent authors include former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, former Labour Minister Elsa Fornero, former Constitutional Court judge Sabino Cassese, Marcello Clarich, Vincenzo Lopilato and former ANAC President Raffaele Cantone. Giappichelli publishes a portfolio of legal journals, among them Rivista di diritto pubblico ed europeo, Rivista di diritto costituzionale, Rivista Trimestrale di diritto societario, the journal of the Associazione Italiana degli Avvocati per la Famiglia e per i Minori, Studi giuridici europei, Rivista della regolazione dei mercati, Jus civile, Processo penale e giustizia and Il diritto dell'unione europea. It also handled distribution of Foro Italiano products for the years 2013–2017. The house operates primarily in the Italian market, with its catalogue aimed at law students, legal professionals, economists and political scientists. Its identity is closely tied to Turin's academic tradition and to the Faculty of Law beside which it was founded.
History
The origins of G. Giappichelli Editore lie in the personal reputation of Modesto Giappichelli, who worked as a janitor (bidello) at the University of Turin. Through reliability and attention to detail he earned the trust of the academics of his time, who entrusted him with their essays, articles and texts. He corrected their proofs, studied them, bound them and kept them. Over time he became a point of reference, and the quality of his work was so appreciated in the university environment that on 5 October 1921, together with his son Giuseppe, Modesto opened his first bookshop and stationer's (cartolibreria) in Turin at Via Vasco 2, right beside the Rectorate of the Faculty of Law. G. Giappichelli Editore was born at that moment. The house developed into a specialist publisher of books and journals in law, economics and political science, aimed at professional practice and university study. It has remained under the guidance of the Giappichelli family and has reached its fifth generation of family leadership. Across its history, more than 10,000 authors have published their writings through Giappichelli. Among those who signed works sold in the earliest years of the publishing house are the jurist Norberto Bobbio, President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi, the academic Francesco Ruffini, the jurist Salvatore Satta, the Romanist Gino Segrè, the legal philosopher Gioele Solari, the economist and politician Paolo Emilio Taviani, the sociologist Renato Treves and the philosopher Alessandro Passerin d'Entrèves. More recent authors include former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, former Labour Minister Elsa Fornero, former Constitutional Court judge Sabino Cassese, former President of the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena Marcello Clarich, Council of State member Vincenzo Lopilato and former ANAC President Raffaele Cantone. The publisher maintains a portfolio of legal journals, including Rivista di diritto pubblico ed europeo, Rivista di diritto costituzionale, Rivista Trimestrale di diritto societario, the journal of the Associazione Italiana degli Avvocati per la Famiglia e per i Minori, Studi giuridici europei, Rivista della regolazione dei mercati, Jus civile, Processo penale e giustizia and Il diritto dell'unione europea. It also handled distribution of Foro Italiano products for the years 2013–2017.
