Overview
G. H. von Mumm’sches Weingut is a wine estate in the Rheingau. According to its official website, its history begins with Gottlieb Mumm, a wine merchant from the Frankfurt banking and trading family P.A. Mumm, who in early summer 1811 offered to buy the entire next wine harvest of Schloss Johannisberg. The 1811 harvest became known as the "Kometen-Ernte" and was one of the best of the 19th century. Mumm invested the profit from this century wine into a series of select vineyards on the Johannisberg, forming the foundation of the estate.
History
The history of G. H. von Mumm’sches Weingut begins with Napoleon, who in 1806 during his campaign against Prussia took possession of Schloss Johannisberg and gave it to his marshal Kellermann, Duke of Valmy, for military services. Kellermann had the Johannisberg administered by a woman, Adelaide Marco, who in 1807 harvested a very good vintage. The following years brought the administrator no luck, and from 1808 to 1810 one poor wine harvest followed another. In early summer 1811, an enterprising wine merchant named Gottlieb Mumm, from the Frankfurt banking and trading family P.A. Mumm, came with a daring offer to acquire the entire next wine harvest of 1811 from Schloss Johannisberg. Marco was glad about the supposed gambler, for the offered 32,000 gulden was a lot of good money for a harvest whose quality was still in the stars. But Gottlieb Mumm had the luck of the bold: the 1811 harvest went down in Rheingau wine history as the "Kometen-Ernte" — it was one of the best of the 19th century. With 50 barrels of 1,200 liters each of the excellent Johannisberger Riesling sites, the wine merchant and banker made a splendid profit of 150,000 gulden. The profit Gottlieb Mumm earned with this century wine he invested profitably again. He invested the considerable proceeds in a series of select good vineyards on the Johannisberg — the foundation for one of the most significant and beautiful wine estates of the Rheingau.
