Overview

The Gablonzer Hütte is an alpine club hut of the Neugablonz-Enns section of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein), situated at 1,522 m above sea level south of the Zwieselalm at the foot of the Donnerkogel in the Gosaukamm range. The shelter stands near the Törleck at 1,616 m above sea level, on the municipal territory of Gosau in Upper Austria, only a few metres from the border with the federal state of Salzburg. Because of its easy accessibility, the Gablonzer Hütte is a popular destination for hikers and day visitors, and in winter it serves as a rest stop for skiers. It is also an excellent starting point for mountaineers undertaking larger tours in the Gosaukamm and through the Dachstein massif, as well as a base for long-distance hikers on the Nordalpenweg. The hut's history begins with the founding of the Gablonz a. N. section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) in the town of Gablonz (Jablonec nad Nisou) in 1902. In 1933, with the help of a factory owner, the section purchased a shell building from which today's Gablonzer Hütte emerged. In 1945 the hut was seized by the Allies as "German property in Austria". In 1951 the Neugablonz-Enns section of the Austrian Alpine Club was founded and worked to recover the confiscated hut. It succeeded, but the hut was "split half-and-half" with a second section, Kaufbeuren-Gablonz of the German Alpine Club. The construction of the Gosaukammbahn made an extension and modernisation of the hut necessary in 1967. Since 2002, the Enns section has been the sole owner of the hut. Access routes include the easy path from the Vorderer Gosausee (930 m, car park) via the Krautgartenalm, with a walking time of 1½ hours; the Gosaukammbahn cable car from the Vorderer Gosausee to the mountain station, from where the hut is 10 minutes away; the easy route from the centre of Gosau (770 m) via the Herrenweg, taking 2½ hours; and the path from Annaberg im Lammertal (Schindlmais car park, 860 m) via Schefferberg and Riedlkaralm, also 2½ hours. Transitions to the Stuhlalm and Theodor-Körner-Hütte via the Austriaweg take 1½ hours, and to the Hofpürglhütte (1,705 m) via the Austriaweg, Stuhlalm and Durchgang take 3 hours. Summit ascents include the Großer Donnerkogel (2,054 m) via the normal route, suitable only for experienced climbers, with climbing sections of UIAA difficulty grade I, secured, walking time 1½ hours; a via ferrata on the Kleiner (1,920 m) and Großer Donnerkogel (2,054 m) through the north flank, only with appropriate equipment; and the Steinriesenkogel (2,008 m) and Strichkogel (2,035 m), reachable via the Großer Donnerkogel in 2 to 2½ hours. The Gablonzer Hütte is listed in the hut directory published by the German Alpine Club, Austrian Alpine Club and Alpine Club South Tyrol: Hoch hinaus! Wege und Hütten in den Alpen (Volume 2, Böhlau Verlag, Vienna/Cologne/Weimar 2016, ISBN 978-3-412-50203-4, p. 93).
