GAG Ludwigshafen am Rhein began in 1920 as a non-profit housing construction company. According to its own history page, the founding took place on 16 June 1920, followed by construction of the Roter and Grüner Hof and the creation of the Ebertsiedlung, Westend- and Christian-Weiß-Siedlung; by 1938 more than 3,000 apartments were available. The Second World War brought major destruction to the city, and many GAG houses were damaged or destroyed: 33% of GAG houses were completely uninhabitable, 55% severely damaged, and only 12% of the stock was without major damage. Between 1956 and 1970 the company expanded, building the Punkthochhäuser at Saarland- and Fontanestraßen, completing the Valentin-Bauer-Siedlung, creating the Ernst-Reuter-Siedlung and the new Pfingstweide district; by 1970 the GAG had more than 11,000 apartments. From 1972 to 1985 the renovation of the Hemshof began, the first senior citizens' residential home opened, the "Integra-Projekt" celebrated its construction start, the first inclusive daycare center was created, the starting signal was given for the "energetisches Bauen" research project, and the first photovoltaic systems were installed. The company today describes itself as a modern service company committed to energy efficiency and sustainability.
