Overview

GAGA Corporation (ギャガ株式会社) is a Japanese film distribution and content company headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo. Founded on January 28, 1986, by Tetsuya Fujimura as GAGA Communications Inc., the company initially focused on importing and selling overseas video software. It grew into one of Japan's most prominent independent film distributors, handling international acquisitions and rights management. Over the decades, GAGA has distributed major foreign hits such as 'The Mask', 'Se7en', 'The Green Mile', and 'Hannibal', earning a reputation as a leading independent distributor. The company also expanded into production, anime, music publishing, and cross-media marketing. GAGA's corporate history includes a listing on the Hercules market (formerly Nasdaq Japan) in 2001, followed by a period under USEN as a consolidated subsidiary from 2005 to 2009. In 2009, the company was acquired by a private company led by Tatsumi Yoda and the Kinoshita Group, and was renamed GAGA Corporation. It later became a subsidiary of GENDA, Inc. in November 2023. Today, GAGA continues to distribute films, produce anime, and manage content rights. In November 2025, it announced the launch of an art-house film label, 'NOROSHI A GAGA LABEL', with its first release planned for 2026. GAGA operates through divisions including content production, distribution, anime and media, and the SPSS company. It has a US office, GAGA AMERICA, and subsidiaries such as GAGA Music Inc. and D-8 Inc. The company is a member of several industry associations, including the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan and the Japan Academy Prize Association.

History

GAGA Corporation was established on January 28, 1986, in Hamamatsucho, Minato-ku, Tokyo, as GAGA Communications Inc. by Tetsuya Fujimura, who had previously worked at Akai Electric. The company's initial purpose was the import and sale of overseas video software. In April 1987, GAGA released its first theatrically distributed film, 'He and He—A Very Big Splash', and established a US office in Los Angeles. That November, it launched the video industry magazine 'Monthly Video Insider Japan'. In August 1988, the company completed its first self-produced American film, 'The Jitters'. In December 1991, it released its first self-produced Japanese film, 'Zeiram'. The 1990s saw GAGA rise to prominence as an independent distributor, scoring major hits with films such as 'The Mask' (1994), 'Se7en', 'The Green Mile', and 'Hannibal'. Its aggressive bidding for foreign films contributed to rising acquisition costs in the Japanese market. In June 2001, GAGA listed on the Hercules market (formerly Nasdaq Japan). In 2002, its subsidiary Coming Soon TV absorbed GAGA Publishing and was renamed GAGA Crossmedia Marketing, which then acquired an 81% stake in Kinema Junpo Sha from Kadokawa Shoten. In January 2005, GAGA became a consolidated subsidiary of USEN through a third-party allotment. In 2006, it began anime production, established a DVD/video sales division, and was delisted from Hercules in October, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of USEN via share exchange. In 2008, the company suffered a major loss with 'The Golden Compass', which earned only 3.5 billion yen against a target of 10 billion yen, after GAGA paid over 2 billion yen for distribution rights. In April 2008, it announced withdrawal from Japanese film production and foreign film acquisition, and in September transferred those businesses to Y's Film, a private company of then-president Yasuhide Uno. In July 2009, all shares held by USEN and Almetex were acquired for 200 million yen by TY Limited (a private company of Tatsumi Yoda) and Kinoshita Management, despite about 7 billion yen in debt. Tatsumi Yoda became Representative Director, Chairman and CEO. On September 1, 2009, the company changed its name to GAGA Corporation and moved its office to a building owned by its parent company in Minami-Aoyama. In November 2014, major shareholders changed, with TY Limited holding 55% and Tatsumi Yoda 45%. In July 2016, a third-party allotment was conducted with Huis Ten Bosch and Creek & River as subscribers, making Huis Ten Bosch the largest shareholder. In March 2019, GAGA and Toho-Towa signed a joint distribution agreement for all DreamWorks Animation films from 2019 onward. In April 2019, the anime division was reorganized into the in-house company 'GAGA Animation Company'. In November 2023, TY Limited acquired all shares held by H.I.S. and Creek & River, and then GENDA, Inc. acquired all shares from TY Limited, making GAGA a subsidiary of GENDA. In November 2025, GAGA announced the launch of the art-house film label 'NOROSHI A GAGA LABEL', with its first release planned for 2026.
