Overview

GAIA ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΕΙΝ (Gaia Epicheirein S.A.) is a Greek company active in agricultural development, providing digital services, technology solutions and information to the primary sector. It was established in 2014 as the result of a broad alliance between agricultural cooperative organizations and strategic partners from the IT and banking sectors, united around a shared vision for a more sustainable and competitive Greek agriculture. The company positions itself as a bridge between agriculture, technology and financing. The shareholder structure reflects this tripartite alliance. According to the company, 72 agricultural cooperatives and organizations participate in its shareholding, operating across the whole of Greece and across all the main production sectors of the country, in both crop and livestock production. Together they represent more than 150,000 producers and rank among the most important in the country in terms of both production activity and turnover. The technology partner is NEUROPUBLIC S.A., an IT and technology company founded in 2003 in Piraeus, specializing in integrated information systems and demanding Web and Cloud applications; it holds a leading position in the agriculture sector and has built the first and only large-scale Internet of Things infrastructure in Greece, with thousands of wireless sensors of its own design and manufacture installed on agricultural land. The banking partner is the Piraeus Bank Group, a leading banking institution in the country, which participates in the shareholding through its Centre for Sustainable Entrepreneurship EXELIXI S.A. GAIA ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΕΙΝ offers services grouped around smart farming, cooperation, business development and extroversion, the Rural Development Programme (RDP), direct payments, and digital tools. Its digital toolset includes GAIA MANAGEMENT for management and financial monitoring, GAIA INVOICE RETRIEVAL for automated retrieval of producers' documents, GAIA BILLING for farmer service centres (KEA) to invoice producers, GAIA CRM for customer-producer management, and GAIA REV EXP for basic accounting support. The company also provides digital submission of OSDΕ (Integrated Administration and Control System) declarations, information platforms on crops and agricultural technologies, collaborations with universities and research institutions for innovative applications, and information and training activities for farmers. In May 2022, in order to respond to the high requirements of the CAP 2023–2027, 23 of the largest private agronomic offices in the country joined the shareholder structure. The company also runs publications such as GAIApedia and engages in initiatives such as CAP4Youth, CAP4Food, climate-smart agriculture, carbon farming and OliveOil-ID. Its stated aim is to shape the future of the agricultural sector through knowledge and technological innovation.

History

GAIA ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΕΙΝ was founded in 2014 as the result of a broader alliance between agricultural cooperative organizations that cooperated with strategic partners from the IT sector and the banking sector, in order to serve a common vision for a more sustainable and competitive Greek agriculture. The company describes the founding as the creation in Greece of a pioneering scheme for pan-European data: a strong alliance between the primary sector, the banking sector and the technology sector, represented respectively by 71 agricultural cooperatives, the Hellenic Livestock Association (SEK), EXELIXI S.A. (a subsidiary of the Piraeus Bank Group), and the IT and technology company NEUROPUBLIC S.A. From the beginning of its operation, the company focused on the digitalization of services in the agricultural sector and on the development of platforms to support producers. Its goal was to act as a bridge between agriculture, technology and financing. The shareholder structure brought together 72 agricultural cooperatives and organizations active across the whole of Greece and across all the main production sectors of the country, in both crop and livestock production, representing more than 150,000 producers in total. The technology partner NEUROPUBLIC S.A. was founded in 2003 in Piraeus and specializes in integrated information systems and demanding Web and Cloud applications; it holds a leading position in the agriculture sector and has created the first and only large-scale Internet of Things infrastructure in Greece, with thousands of wireless sensors of its own design and manufacture installed on agricultural land. The Piraeus Bank Group, a leading banking institution in the country, participates in the shareholding through the Centre for Sustainable Entrepreneurship EXELIXI S.A., which develops activities for the effective support of sustainable entrepreneurship in Greece. In May 2022, in order to respond to the high requirements of the CAP 2023–2027, 23 of the largest private agronomic offices in the country were incorporated into the shareholder structure. The synergies the founders envisioned and implemented, and their common strategic targeting for a more sustainable and competitive national primary sector driven by knowledge and technological innovation, are reflected today in the very objectives and tools of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the European Green Deal. Over time the company has provided services such as digital submission of OSDΕ (Integrated Administration and Control System) declarations, information platforms for crops and agricultural technologies, collaborations with universities and research institutions for the development of innovative applications, and information and training activities for farmers. It has also developed a suite of digital tools for producers and farmer service centres, including GAIA MANAGEMENT, GAIA INVOICE RETRIEVAL, GAIA BILLING, GAIA CRM and GAIA REV EXP, and has run publications such as GAIApedia and initiatives such as CAP4Youth, CAP4Food, climate-smart agriculture, carbon farming and OliveOil-ID.
