Overview

Galerie Marzee is a contemporary jewellery gallery in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. It was founded in 1979 by Marie-José van den Hout and describes itself as having been a driving force in the promotion of contemporary jewellery and metalwork from around the world for more than forty-five years. The gallery moved to its current home, a former granary on the banks of the river Waal, in 1995, and states that it was then, and remains today, the world's largest independent gallery for contemporary jewellery. Alongside its permanent Marzee Collection, opened to the public for the gallery's 25th anniversary in 2004, Marzee presents four exhibitions every year as well as the annual Marzee International Graduate Show, held every summer.

History

In 1978 Marie-José van den Hout opened a small gallery on the Lage Hezelstraat in Nijmegen, a Dutch city on the banks of the River Waal, in the province of Gelderland. At first she showed jewellery made by her brother in the front room of the gallery, and fine art in a white-tiled room at the back of the building. After a few years she decided to specialise in a different kind of jewellery, and in 1987 the gallery moved to a larger space on Ganzenheuvel and began to show jewellery by local artists such as Herman Hermsen and Nel Linssen, who both lived in Nijmegen. In 1989, celebrating the gallery's tenth anniversary, she organised an exhibition of combs; eventually travelling to Japan, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, the exhibition brought Marzee international recognition. Following the success of the combs show, the gallery moved again in 1995 to the building it occupies today — a former grain store on the banks of the river Waal, restored from a ruin to house the gallery and the Marzee Collection. The building, originally named De Gouden Schepel (The Golden Bushel), was constructed in 1904 using beams from a seventeenth century structure on the same site and renovated by architects Bert Dirxx and Peter Groot of Dirrix Van Wylick Architects in Eindhoven, with a seven metre high glass house added on the side of the building. The gallery's About page states that it was founded in 1979 by Marie-José van den Hout in a small gallery space on the Lange Hezelstraat in Nijmegen, and that for more than forty-five years it has been a driving force in the promotion of contemporary jewellery and metalwork from around the world. Its permanent Marzee Collection was opened to the public for the gallery's 25th anniversary in 2004. Marzee presents four exhibitions every year, each showing work by four or five of its artists, as well as the annual Marzee International Graduate Show, held every summer.
