History
According to the official Galimard site, the Parfumerie Galimard was founded in 1747 and is one of the first French perfume houses. Its founder, Jean de Galimard, Seigneur de Séranon and member of the Gantiers Parfumeurs guild, supplied the court of King Louis XV with olive oils, pomades and perfumes for which he invented the original formulas. The site states that the rare scents of the Côte d'Azur earned Grasse the title of World Capital of Perfume, and that at the end of the 18th century Grasse built the foundations of a powerful industry. The official history page also records later milestones: in the 1920s to 1940s, Siméon Roux, a veteran of the Great War and Chevalier du Mérite Agricole, cultivated orange blossom and jasmine flowers for the great Grasse perfume houses; in 1950, chemist engineer Joseph Roux, who had spent his childhood in his father Siméon's flower fields, created a distillery at Gourdon, a medieval village above Grasse, named la Source Parfumée, and revived the story of Jean de Galimard by opening a perfume shop in the hôtel particulier of the Comte de Thorenc in the heart of old Grasse; in 1965 Galimard opened a boutique on the prestigious Cours Honoré Cresp, on the ground floor of the Casino Municipal; in the 1980s, Jean-Pierre Roux, son of Joseph Roux, decided to introduce the region's many visitors to the secrets of perfume, and the Usine-Musée on route de Cannes, inaugurated in 1980, introduced visitors to the world of perfumes and Grasse perfumery know-how; a new factory equipped with its traditional soap works opened in 1986 at the foot of a picturesque medieval village.
