Overview

Gangstad gårdsysteri is a family-owned farm dairy located at Øvre Gangstad on Sandvollan in Inderøy municipality, Trøndelag, Norway. Established in 1998, it was the country's first authorized farm dairy (gårdsysteri) based on the farm's own cow's milk. The farm has been in the Gangstad family since 1913, when Astrid Aasen's grandfather John M. Aasen bought it. Astrid Aasen and her husband Perry Frøysadal took over operations in 1983 and later founded the dairy to create more jobs and improve the economics of milk production. The dairy processes approximately 450,000 liters of milk into about 55 tonnes of cheese annually and has 12 full-time equivalent employees. In 2008, ice cream production was added. The farm is part of the tourist route "Den Gyldne Omvei" (The Golden Detour) in Inderøy. Gangstad gårdsysteri has received numerous awards for its cheeses. At the 2023 World Cheese Awards, seven of its cheeses won medals, and its "Nidelven Blå" was named World's Best Cheese among 4,502 entries. The same year, it received the Sustainability Prize at the Trøndersk Matfestival in Trondheim. The dairy offers cheese, ice cream, marmalades, drinks, crackers, flatbread, and meat products, sold nationwide through an established retail chain. The current farm is run by Maren Gangstad and her husband Ole-Morten Gangstad.

History

Gangstad gårdsysteri traces its roots to Øvre Gangstad farm in Sandvollan, Inderøy, Trøndelag. The farm was purchased by John M. Aasen, grandfather of Astrid Aasen, in 1913. Milk production has been continuous on the farm. In 1983, Astrid Aasen and her husband Perry Frøysadal took over operations. Astrid was a teacher and allergic to cows, while Perry was a civil engineer who quit his job to manage the herd and farm. Seeking to create more jobs and improve the profitability of milk production, they opened Norway's first authorized farm dairy on cow's milk in 1998. This was pioneering work that attracted significant attention. They collaborated closely with TINE and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority to develop new regulations for this type of business, as none existed at the time. In 2008, ice cream production began. The dairy now processes about 450,000 liters of milk into approximately 55 tonnes of cheese annually and employs 12 full-time equivalents. The farm is part of the tourist route "Den Gyldne Omvei" in Inderøy. The current generation, Maren Gangstad and her husband Ole-Morten Gangstad, run the farm. The dairy has won numerous awards for its cheeses. At the 2023 World Cheese Awards, seven of its cheeses won medals, and "Nidelven Blå" was named World's Best Cheese among 4,502 entries. In the same year, it received the Sustainability Prize at the Trøndersk Matfestival in Trondheim. Products include cheese, ice cream, marmalades, drinks, crackers, flatbread, and meat products, sold nationwide through an established retail chain.
