Overview
Gardenia Foods, also referred to as Gardenia Bakeries or simply Gardenia, is a Singaporean baked-goods company whose principal business is the manufacture and distribution of packaged bread, buns, cakes, pastries and related bakery products. The company is associated with Gardenia Foods (S) Pte Ltd. and operates within the wider QAF Limited group, which also owns Bonjour Bakery. Although the brand has a substantial presence in Malaysia and originated from business activity in Sabah, the canonical Gardenia Foods entity is Singaporean and is headquartered at the Chinatown Complex on South Bridge Road in Singapore. The business traces its early development to Wong Tze Fatt, a Malaysian entrepreneur from Sabah who inherited and expanded his father's coffee-shop business. That activity developed into a supermarket operation and later into baking, in-flight catering and related food businesses. In the course of seeking technical and commercial assistance for a wholesale bakery, Wong consulted the United States Embassy's trade representative in Singapore and met Horatio Sye Slocumm, an American adviser associated with the International Executive Service Corps and experienced in the United States bakery sector. Together they established the earlier Gardenia operation in Sabah around the beginning of the 1970s. Gardenia initially combined wholesale baking with other food activities. In 1981, a separate Gardenia beverage business collaborated with PepsiCo International to distribute canned soft drinks in East Malaysia. The wider operation also produced ice cream and creamer products and provided in-flight catering through Gardenia Catering Services at Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Brunei International Airport. The bakery business subsequently expanded beyond Sabah into Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia, while the Gardenia brand later entered the Philippines and additional Asian markets. In Singapore, Gardenia began as a retail store bakery. Rising demand led to the opening of a commercial bakery at Pandan Loop in March 1983, followed by a second Singapore bakery in June 1993. Wong sold his shares to QAF Limited in 1984. QAF thereafter oversaw Gardenia's Singapore operations and developed its Peninsular Malaysian presence through Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn. Bhd. The Sabah business remained organizationally separate and continued under Wong's management until his death in 2004; Gardenia's Malaysian operations therefore developed through more than one management and licensing structure rather than as a single fully integrated national business. Today, Gardenia's country operations are managed through separate subsidiaries, joint ventures and licensees. Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn. Bhd. manages Peninsular Malaysia, while Gardenia Food Industries operates in Brunei and Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc. serves the Philippines. PT Gardenia Makmur Selaras entered the Indonesian market outside Kalimantan in 2013, with distribution supported through the Indomaret network. Since 2020, production in Sabah, Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan has been licensed to Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated, whose products use recipes distinct from those of the Peninsular Malaysian operation. The Philippine business has manufacturing capacity in Laguna, Pampanga, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu, with Vitabread Food Products Inc. manufacturing Gardenia products for Luzon. Gardenia has positioned itself as a mass-market packaged-bread and bakery supplier, emphasizing broad retail availability and regional manufacturing. In Singapore, the company stated in 2019 that its products were already free of partially hydrogenated oils, ahead of Singapore's prohibition on such oils taking effect in June 2021. In May 2026, Gardenia announced a proposed restructuring of Singapore manufacturing that would transfer bakery production to Johor Bahru while retaining Singapore functions such as brand management, product development, quality and regulatory oversight, distribution…
History
Gardenia's origins are connected to Wong Tze Fatt's expansion of a Sabah family coffee-shop business into supermarkets and then into baking and in-flight catering. Seeking assistance to establish a wholesale bakery, Wong consulted the United States Embassy's trade representation in Singapore and met Horatio Sye Slocumm, an American bakery specialist working with the International Executive Service Corps. Their collaboration produced the earlier Gardenia wholesale bakery operation in Kota Kinabalu around 1970. The Sabah business was initially broader than a bread manufacturer. It operated bakery activities, in-flight catering and food-related businesses, and in 1981 worked with PepsiCo International as a franchisee for canned soft drinks in East Malaysia. Gardenia also manufactured ice cream and creamer products. Its catering arm served Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Brunei International Airport. The bakery subsequently expanded into Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. Singapore became a major center for the brand. Gardenia first operated there as a store bakery, but demand supported the opening of a commercial facility at Pandan Loop in March 1983. A second bakery followed in June 1993. In 1984, Wong sold his shares to QAF Limited, which assumed oversight of Gardenia in Singapore and later developed the Peninsular Malaysian business through Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn. Bhd. The Sabah operation remained separate from the Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia businesses and stayed under Wong's management until his murder on 9 December 2004. Expansion continued through distinct country entities. Gardenia Food Industries has operated in Brunei since 1972 and became a leading local producer and wholesaler of bread, buns, cakes and pastries. Gardenia entered the Philippines in 1997 and developed manufacturing sites in Laguna, Pampanga, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu; Vitabread Food Products Inc. manufactures products for the Luzon market. In Indonesia, PT Gardenia Makmur Selaras expanded beyond Kalimantan in 2013, with bread distributed through Indomaret under the Prime Bread name. From 2017, the Peninsular Malaysian operation included a 50 percent stake held by Padiberas Nasional Berhad. Since 2020, Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated has licensed production in Sabah, Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan, using recipes different from those used in Peninsular Malaysia. By late 2017, Gardenia's operations or market presence extended across Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia and China. In 2019, the company addressed Singapore's forthcoming restriction on partially hydrogenated oils, stating that its products were already free of these ingredients. In 2026, Gardenia announced a planned manufacturing shift from Singapore to Johor Bahru. The plan would end production at Pandan Loop, affect 141 employees and preserve a reduced Singapore presence focused on corporate, technical, regulatory, distribution and supply-chain functions.
