Overview
Gasthaus Stuhlmacher is a historic restaurant and tavern located at the Prinzipalmarkt in Münster, Germany, directly next to the city's historic town hall. It is counted among the oldest restaurants in Münster and has been family-owned since its founding in 1890, when the restaurateur Louis Stuhlmacher purchased a house built in 1470. The business has remained in the hands of the Stuhlmacher and later Feldhaus families, and is currently run by the Feldhaus family in the fourth generation. The restaurant combines the character of a formal restaurant with that of a traditional pub or tavern, offering several individually designed rooms and a large terrace. Its kitchen is described as gutbürgerlich (good home-style) with a Westphalian accent, and the service staff still wear traditional professional clothing reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s. The establishment occupies around 250 square metres across five rooms, plus a roughly 100-square-metre terrace on the Prinzipalmarkt. It serves as a home for many regulars' tables, clubs, and student associations, and is a popular destination for tourists from the region, the neighbouring Netherlands, and overseas. Over its more than 125-year history, the Gasthaus Stuhlmacher has become a core part of Münster's gastronomic identity.
History
The history of Gasthaus Stuhlmacher begins in 1890, when the restaurateur Louis Stuhlmacher purchased a house built in 1470 on the Prinzipalmarkt in Münster from the innkeeper Gunnemann for 105,000 gold marks. The establishment remained in the Stuhlmacher family after Louis's death in 1912; his widow married the restaurateur Julius Feldhaus in 1914. In 1929 the couple adopted Franz Schulte, the widow's nephew. During the 1920s and 1930s, the legendary "Tante Anna" shaped the house's service culture, and the traditional professional clothing worn by staff to this day recalls that era. In 1944, the medieval building was completely destroyed in an Allied air raid. Franz Feldhaus, the successor, and his wife Margret began rebuilding immediately after the war ended, and the house reopened on 5 October 1948. In 1980/81, Franz Feldhaus handed over the gastronomic business to his sons Franz-Julius and Georg Feldhaus. At that time, the Cafe Schucan, run in the style of Viennese coffeehouse culture, and the Gasthaus Stuhlmacher formed a gastronomic pair on the Prinzipalmarkt. The Stuhlmacher has belonged to the core inventory of Münster for 125 years. Today the restaurant is run by the Feldhaus family in the fourth generation, offering Westphalian hospitality across approximately 250 square metres in five rooms and a roughly 100-square-metre terrace. It continues to serve as a home for regulars' tables, clubs, and student associations, and remains a destination for tourists from the region, the Netherlands, and overseas.
