Overview

The Gauermannhütte is a managed mountain refuge (Schutzhütte) situated just below the summit of the Plattenstein (1,154 m) on the Dürre Wand ridge in the Gutensteiner Alps of Lower Austria, within the municipality of Miesenbach. It is owned by the Österreichischer Touristenklub (ÖTK), Austria's traditional hiking and mountaineering association, and is administered by the ÖTK section 'Alpine Gesellschaft D'Bergwanderer', which was founded on 5 May 1922. The hut is named after the Biedermeier landscape painter Friedrich Gauermann (1807–1862), who was born in Miesenbach and drew inspiration from the surrounding Hohe Wand and Dürre Wand landscapes. Built by the Viennese alpine society 'Waldegger', the shelter opened on 25 October 1908 and has served hikers for more than a century. It offers simple overnight accommodation in beds and dormitory places, along with food and drink, and is known for its friendly hut keeping by ÖTK members. Its terrace and surroundings provide panoramic views of the Schneeberg, Untersberg and Ötscher mountains. The Gauermannhütte is a popular destination for day walks in the Gutensteiner Alps. The shortest approach starts from Tiefenbach (a small signed car park) via the Ochsenweg and takes about 1½ hours; an alternative route branches right after roughly 100 metres past the Schwaighofer farm and follows the eastern ridge, taking 1½ to 2 hours and offering finer views. The hut is listed on the ÖTK's official hut platform and on regional outdoor portals, where it is described as one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Gutensteiner Alps.

History

The Gauermannhütte was built by the Viennese alpine society 'Waldegger' and officially opened on 25 October 1908. It stands about 5 metres below the summit of the Plattenstein (1,154 m) on the Dürre Wand in the Lower Austrian municipality of Miesenbach. The shelter was named after the painter Friedrich Gauermann, a leading Biedermeier landscape artist born on 20 September 1807 in Miesenbach (Scheuchenstein). Gauermann lived from 1807 to 1862 and found numerous motifs in the Hohe Wand and Dürre Wand area; a notable circle of painters gathered around him and repeatedly depicted the Schneeberg region. His animal studies, such as the 'Röhrender Hirsch im Wald', and his drawings of rock formations made him famous. Ownership of the hut passed to the Österreichischer Touristenklub (ÖTK), one of Austria's oldest hiking associations. Since 1922 it has been administered by the ÖTK section 'Alpine Gesellschaft D'Bergwanderer', which was founded on 5 May 1922. The hut has remained a managed refuge (Bewirtschaftete Hütte) offering overnight accommodation in beds and dormitory places, with food and drink served to visitors. It is listed among the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Gutensteiner Alps and is promoted on the ÖTK's hut platform and regional outdoor portals. Access to the Gauermannhütte is on foot. The shortest route begins at Tiefenbach, where a small signed car park serves hikers, and follows the Ochsenweg for about 1½ hours. An alternative approach branches right after roughly 100 metres past the Schwaighofer farm and continues along the eastern ridge, taking 1½ to 2 hours; this ridge route is considered more scenic. From the hut, visitors enjoy a sweeping panorama that includes the Schneeberg, Untersberg and Ötscher.
