Overview

Gaznat is a Swiss energy company described as an expert in natural and renewable gas. Since 1968 it has secured the gas supply of French-speaking Switzerland, and it states it is preparing the future with advanced infrastructure, a decarbonation strategy and an action plan aimed at the 'Net Zero 2050' objective. Its stated mission is to guarantee a reliable, sustainable and innovative supply for its customers and future generations.

History

Gaznat was created in 1968 as a study company with the mission of promoting the arrival of natural gas in French-speaking Switzerland, marking the start of the construction of a structured supply network for the region. In 1974 the first Swiss Romand gas pipeline (GSR) was commissioned, linking Bex to Vernier and passing notably under Lake Geneva via a sub-lacustrine installation unprecedented in Europe, establishing a strategic energy link between Valais and Geneva. In 1979 Unigaz SA was created to connect the Swiss network to Transitgas. In 1995 a second sub-lacustrine pipeline was built between Les Grangettes and Gland, increasing transport capacity with technical landfalls at Clarens, Lausanne-Bellerive and Tolochenaz while preserving the Lake Geneva landscape. In 2014 two Chairs were created with EPFL, launching a scientific programme. In 2023 the Trélex–Colovre pipeline was commissioned. The company states that it has accompanied the evolution of the Swiss gas sector for more than 50 years.
