GDI Ainsworth describes itself as North America's facility management company, delivering cleaning, maintenance, and technical services across North America. GDI Ainsworth's published history traces its roots to two companies. Robertson Janitorial Ltd. began in 1926 as a small cleaning service supporting Quebec City's growing economic landscape, and in 1946 it expanded into Montreal to meet rising demand for cleaning and maintenance services. Ainsworth Inc. was started in 1933 by brothers F.C. and C.J. Ainsworth, initially providing industrial services including installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment. Between 1936 and 1944 Ainsworth expanded into electrical construction across Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes, and in 1944 created a complete motor and transformer repair service. In 1946 the Ainsworth brothers incorporated Ainsworth Electric Co. Limited and established four divisions: Construction, Industrial, Motor and Transformer, and Electrical Apparatus Sales. In 1953 the Estimating and Engineering Division was created. In 1957 Ainsworth built its head office at 131 Bermondsey Rd, which the company states remains its Toronto head office today. From 1958 to 1986 Ainsworth became one of Toronto's largest electrical contractors, completing major projects such as the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) and employing over 700 electricians. Between 1987 and 1989 Robertson Janitorial Ltd. changed its name to Service d'entretien Distinction.
