Overview

GDW-Nord — formally the Genossenschaft der Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen in Norddeutschland e.G., commonly written gdw nord — is a registered cooperative based in Oschersleben, Germany. It is a cooperative association of workshops for people with disabilities (Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen, WfbM) in northern Germany. Its stated purpose is to pool the strengths of its member workshops, create synergies and achieve joint success with customers, with the overriding priority of securing and future-proofing jobs for people with disabilities. The cooperative acts as an interface between companies and its member workshops. It acquires orders from industry, services and public institutions and coordinates their execution, including logistics, especially for large or cross-regional contracts that require the involvement of several workshops. Its work is organised around four core business areas: order management (Auftragsmanagement), environmental services (Umweltservice), consulting (Beratung) and further training (Fortbildung). On the commercial side, gdw nord offers a broad catalogue of services delivered by its member workshops. These include electrical assembly, recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment, destruction of data carriers and files, garden and landscape maintenance, woodworking, metalworking, confectioning and packaging, assembly of components, printing and graphics, office services, textile and leather processing, and laundry services. Customers can also submit individual enquiries. For social institutions, gdw nord provides services in occupational safety, project management, environmental services, management systems, organisational development, agriculture and horticulture, officer/representative functions (Beauftragtenwesen), hygiene and food safety, and digital education, including the didab and IntResT offerings. It also runs further education, dates and in-house seminars for members. In its environmental service area, the cooperative network offers high-quality recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment and the proper destruction of files and data carriers. Electronic devices are dismantled by hand by people with disabilities in the workshops and separated into pollutant and recyclable fractions. The cooperative emerged from the merger of the two cooperatives gdw nord and gdw nbsa. More than 80 cooperative members from the northern federal states — Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg — support gdw nord. Together with the affiliated organisations gdw mitte and gdw süd, the gdw network is represented throughout Germany, enabling cross-regional orders and projects that require a nationwide network.

History

GDW-Nord, formally the Genossenschaft der Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen in Norddeutschland e.G. (short: gdw nord), is a registered cooperative founded by sponsors and institutions of disability assistance in Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony-Anhalt. It is a cooperative association of workshops for people with disabilities (Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen, WfbM). The cooperative was founded with the aim of pooling strengths, creating synergies and achieving joint success with customers. From this follows the priority of securing and future-proofing jobs for people with disabilities. This goal is pursued with great commitment by the team in four core business areas: order management, environmental services, consulting and further training. The cooperative supports member workshops directly through order management and environmental services, and indirectly through consulting and training offerings that provide both support and qualification. Order management complements the regional activities of the WfbM, particularly where cross-regional tasks require the coordination of the deployment of several WfbM. In this role, gdw nord is the decisive interface. In the environmental service area, the network offers high-quality recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment and the proper destruction of files and data carriers. Electronic devices are dismantled by hand by people with disabilities in the workshops and separated into pollutant and recyclable fractions. A distinctive feature is that, alongside order management, gdw nord also offers training and consulting services for WfbM and other social institutions. Support focuses on management systems, preparation for certification in the waste sector, occupational safety, data carrier destruction, horticulture and hygiene. The three gdw organisations — gdw nord, gdw mitte and gdw süd — together with their affiliated workshops are represented throughout Germany. In this way, cross-regional orders and projects that require a nationwide network can be implemented.

  • Merger of the two cooperatives gdw nord and gdw nbsa to form GDW-Nord.

  • More than 80 cooperative members from seven northern German federal states support gdw nord.
