Overview

GE HealthCare is an American medical-technology company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It supplies hospitals, health systems, clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, and other healthcare organizations with diagnostic-imaging equipment, ultrasound systems, patient-monitoring and care technologies, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and clinical software. Its principal operating areas are Medical Imaging, Ultrasound, Patient Care Solutions, and Pharmaceutical Diagnostics. The company emerged from General Electric’s healthcare business but has much older technological roots. Its lineage reaches back to Victor Electric Company, founded in Chicago in 1893 by Charles F. Samms and Julius B. Wantz. Victor initially served the dental market and entered X-ray equipment soon after Wilhelm Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays. General Electric acquired Victor in 1920, and the business was subsequently known as GE X-Ray, General Electric X-Ray, GE Medical Systems, and later GE Healthcare. Over time, it expanded from X-ray tubes and radiography into computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, cardiology, anesthesia, respiratory care, patient monitoring, healthcare information technology, contrast media, and radiopharmaceuticals. The business accelerated its diversification during the 1990s and 2000s through research, international partnerships, and acquisitions. Important additions included Technicare, which strengthened CT and imaging capabilities; Marquette Medical Systems, which broadened cardiology and monitoring; Instrumentarium and its Datex-Ohmeda operations, which added anesthesia and respiratory-care products; Amersham, which expanded pharmaceutical diagnostics; and IDX Systems, which added clinical information and revenue-cycle software. GE also developed major MRI and CT manufacturing and research capabilities in the United States and established regional operations in Europe, Asia, and India. In 2021, General Electric announced a plan to separate into three independent public companies. GE HealthCare became an independent, publicly traded company on January 4, 2023, under GE HealthCare Technologies Inc., while retaining the GE HealthCare brand. Its portfolio now combines capital equipment, consumables, software, artificial intelligence, and clinical workflow solutions. The company operates in more than 100 countries and serves hospitals and health networks worldwide. The United States remains its largest market, while China is an important market in which it faces increasing local competition. GE HealthCare’s present strategy emphasizes precision health, workflow integration, data and software, artificial intelligence, and technologies intended to improve clinical productivity and patient outcomes.

History

GE HealthCare’s history begins with Victor Electric Company, established in Chicago in 1893 by Charles F. Samms and Julius B. Wantz. The young company first made dental equipment, then entered X-ray technology in 1896, shortly after the discovery of X-rays. It developed X-ray tubes, electrostatic generators, and related electrotherapeutic devices, and grew rapidly as medical radiography became established. In 1916 Victor merged with several other companies, and General Electric acquired the business in 1920. The Victor name was gradually replaced by General Electric X-Ray branding; the company became General Electric X-Ray Corporation in 1926 and phased out the Victor name by 1930. During and after the Second World War, demand for X-ray equipment increased, including for military medicine and industrial inspection. In 1947 the operation moved from Chicago to West Milwaukee, Wisconsin, partly to access the region’s glass-manufacturing expertise needed for X-ray tubes. In the 1950s it became GE’s X-Ray Department and then GE Medical Systems as its activities broadened beyond radiography. Patient-monitoring work began in the early 1960s, followed by modular monitoring equipment for cardiac and intensive-care settings. GE also developed pacemakers, surgical equipment, and blood-gas monitoring technologies. The business entered computed tomography in the 1970s; work began in 1974 and its first CT system was installed in 1976. MRI became a major area in the 1980s. GE invested heavily in MRI manufacturing and research at Waukesha, Wisconsin, and developed the Signa platform. The 1985 acquisition of Technicare strengthened CT, X-ray, and emerging MRI capabilities. GE’s international organization expanded through partnerships, including a 1982 joint venture with Yokogawa Electric, and through the 1988 combination of GE Medical Europe with France’s CGR. The 1990s brought broad diversification. GE HealthCare was incorporated in 1994, while the business pursued acquisitions in imaging, ultrasound, cardiology, healthcare IT, and nuclear medicine. Resonex, Diasonics Vingmed, Marquette Medical Systems, and the nuclear and MR businesses of Elscint were among the additions during the decade. In the early 2000s, GE acquired Imatron, MedicaLogic, Visualization Technology, Millbrook, Instrumentarium, and Amersham. These transactions expanded the company into electron-beam CT, electronic medical records, image-guided surgery, practice management, anesthesia and ventilation, contrast media, and radiopharmaceuticals. IDX Systems, acquired in 2006, further strengthened clinical information systems and healthcare revenue-management software. The company continued to reorganize and refine its portfolio in the 2010s. It moved its global headquarters to Chicago in 2016, sold several healthcare information-technology assets to Veritas Capital in 2018, and continued developing imaging, monitoring, ultrasound, and digital products. GE announced plans to spin off the healthcare business in 2018, but the timetable changed after GE sold its biopharmaceutical business to Danaher. In 2021 GE announced that it would separate into three public companies. Before the separation, GE HealthCare acquired BK Medical, a surgical-visualization company. The spin-off was completed on January 4, 2023, creating GE HealthCare Technologies Inc. as an independent listed company. Since separation, the company has added Caption Health and the clinical artificial-intelligence business of Intelligent Ultrasound. It continues to operate internationally across Medical Imaging, Ultrasound, Patient Care Solutions, and Pharmaceutical Diagnostics, with software and artificial intelligence increasingly integrated into its equipment and clinical workflows.
