Overview
General Paint describes itself as one of the most respected manufacturers in the Canadian paint industry. Its official history traces the business to 1911, when Alan J. Ayres and his son Tom started the Ayres Varnish Company in Vancouver; the first General Paint store opened in Vancouver in 1921, and the company name became General Paint Corporation of Canada in 1930. The company says it serves a loyal independent dealer network and Reno Depot in Calgary, and its product range covers exterior, interior, primers and sealers, and stains and speciality categories.
History
General Paint's official history states that in the spring of 1911, Alan J. Ayres and his son Tom started the Ayres Varnish Company in Vancouver, beginning in a three square-metre cooking shed with no electricity or plumbing. In 1920 the business was renamed the Ayres Varnish and Paint Company to reflect expanded offerings, and 1921 marks the year the first General Paint store opened in Vancouver, BC. In July 1929 a fire caused by spontaneous combustion gutted the main paint factory, and the damaged areas were replaced. In 1930 the company name was changed to General Paint Corporation of Canada. In the 1950s, growing demand was met with an increase in retail presence and more stores opened across the country. By the 1990s, the number of stores had almost tripled from 22 in 1979 to 65 by 1990.
