Overview

Genital Autonomy America is the name adopted in January 2016 by the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC), which retired its former name. NOCIRC was founded in 1985 by a group of healthcare professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area led by Marilyn Milos RN, and was announced on March 15, 1986 as the first national clearinghouse in the United States for information about circumcision. It is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization committed to securing the birthright of male, female, and intersex children and babies to keep their sex organs intact. In its first decade NOCIRC grew into an international network with more than 110 centers worldwide. The organization provides educational material about the structures, functions, development, and care of normal penile anatomy and information about circumcision, the care of the circumcised, and the intact penis. It suggests circumcision be performed only when absolutely medically necessary, after all non-invasive therapies have failed, or when an adult gives consent after being fully informed about the risks and harm of the surgery. NOCIRC maintains offices open to the public, answers requests for information by phone and mail, and offers a referral service providing names of doctors, lawyers and advocates.

History

On March 15, 1986, a group of healthcare professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area, led by Marilyn Milos RN, announced the (1985) founding of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC), described as the first national clearinghouse in the United States for information about circumcision. In its first decade, NOCIRC grew into an international network and now has more than 110 centers worldwide. In January 2016, NOCIRC retired its name and adopted the name Genital Autonomy - America (GA-America). The website states it will remain online because NOCIRC publications continue to be valuable, are not copyrighted so that the information will be disseminated, and its video is still useful for protecting the rights of infants and children. Since NOCIRC is no longer sponsoring NOCIRC Centers, Jen Williams has invited hosts of NOCIRC Centers to join her organization, Your Whole Baby.
