Overview
Genron Co., Ltd. (株式会社ゲンロン) is a small Japanese publisher and cultural enterprise headquartered in Nishi-Gotanda, Shinagawa, Tokyo. It was founded in April 2010 by critic Hiroki Azuma together with interior designer/architect Yoshihide Asako and spatial designer Ri Myong-hui, originally as Contectures, LLC (合同会社コンテクチュアズ). The company changed its name to Genron Co., Ltd. in April 2012. Its mission is to build a cross-disciplinary 'platform of knowledge' that breaks free from the conventions of academia and the humanities publishing industry, returning to the original Greek meaning of philosophy as 'the love of wisdom.' Genron's activities span several interconnected fields. It publishes the criticism journal 'Genron' (ゲンロン), launched in December 2015, which continues the editorial spirit of its earlier publications 'Shisō Chizu β' and 'Genron Tsūshin.' It also publishes the 'Genron Sōsho' book series (launched 2018), the 'Genron SF Bunko' paperback series (2020), and the electronic criticism magazine 'Genron β' (2016–2023). Its online article site 'web Genron' (formerly 'Genron α') launched in April 2020. In 2024 it released a beta version of 'Kujira,' an AI-assisted librarian/search service. Beyond publishing, Genron operates the event space 'Genron Cafe' in Gotanda, Tokyo, opened in February 2013, which hosts talks by figures from the humanities, sciences, arts, and music. These events are streamed via Niconico Live and Genron's own paid platform 'Shirasu' (シラス), launched in October 2020 by group company Shirasu LLC. Genron also runs cultural schools, including the 'Ōmori Nozomi SF Writing Course' (2016–) and the 'Hirameki☆Manga Classroom' (2017–). It has a membership organization, the 'Genron Tomo no Kai' (Friends of Genron), which supports its activities. Genron is a private company with capital of 10 million yen and 14 employees as of April 2025. Its representative director is Yōko Ueda, with Hiroki Azuma and Masaki Ueda as directors. The company has received several awards, including the 36th Azusakai Publishing Culture Award Special Prize (2020) and the 71st Mainichi Publishing Culture Award (2017).
